0W-16 and 0W-20 are different viscosity grades. 0W-16 is the thinner grade, specified for newer Toyota and Honda engines with tighter bearing clearances engineered for maximum fuel economy.
If your vehicle requires one, use that grade. Substituting a thicker oil can reduce fuel economy and increase engine wear on tight-tolerance modern engines.
The first number is the cold-weather viscosity (W = winter). A lower number flows better in cold. The second number is operating viscosity at 100°C.
0W-16 flows slightly thinner at operating temperature than 0W-20.
0W-20 has a slightly higher operating viscosity than 0W-16. It provides a marginally thicker oil film at high temperatures.
Most vehicles that required 5W-30 have now transitioned to 0W-20 in updated specs to improve fuel economy.
Modern engines are machined to extremely tight tolerances. Clearances are set assuming a specific oil viscosity.
Using a thicker oil than specified may not cause immediate damage but reduces the fuel economy benefit and can slow oil circulation on cold starts.
In an emergency with no alternative available, one grade up or down is unlikely to cause immediate damage.
But for regular service, always use the manufacturer-specified grade. Check your oil cap or owner manual.
Toyota and Honda started specifying 0W-16 around 2018-2022 for newer 4-cylinder engines. Check your oil cap or owner manual. Common applications: Toyota Corolla 2019+, Honda Civic 1.5T 2022+, Toyota RAV4 2.5L 2019+.
0W-20 is slightly thicker. If your vehicle specifies 0W-16, using 0W-20 may slightly reduce fuel economy. For a single oil change in an emergency it is acceptable, but use the correct grade for regular service.
Check the oil filler cap on the engine, the owner manual oil specification section, or the door jamb sticker. Never go by what looks familiar.
