Tedious Auto Repair

Founder, owner, and ASE Master Technician. Serving Chico/Butte County since 2007.
Buddy Rausch is the founder, owner, and Master Technician at Tedious Auto Repair in Chico, CA. He started the shop in 2007 on Mangrove Avenue, grew it into a 4.9-star NAPA Gold AutoCare Center at 2695 CA-32, and personally oversees the diagnostic standards and repair procedures applied to every vehicle that comes through the bay. He has worked on cars in Butte County for over 18 years and signs off on the technical content published on this site.
Buddy Rausch founded Tedious Auto Repair in 2007 with a single goal: build the kind of shop he himself would want to take his car to — honest, transparent, technically excellent, and built around the customer rather than around upselling. Eighteen years later, that mission has produced 714+ Google reviews, a 4.9-star rating, and a customer base that spans from Chico State students to Paradise commuters to Lake Oroville recreational drivers to Butte County diesel truck owners.
The shop started as a small garage on Mangrove Avenue in Chico. Word-of-mouth from satisfied customers grew the business steadily, and the operation eventually moved to its current location at 2695 CA-32, just east of Chico on the way to the Skyway turnoff. The new location allowed Tedious to expand into a full-service NAPA Gold AutoCare Center, take on more European and diesel work, and add specialty services like Hunter Hawkeye Elite alignments, R-1234yf AC service, and the 100-point digital inspection that's now included free with every visit.
Buddy holds Master Technician certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, the highest individual ASE credential. This requires passing all eight Series A automotive certification exams (Engine Repair, Automatic Transmission, Manual Drivetrain & Axles, Suspension & Steering, Brakes, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Heating & AC, Engine Performance) and maintaining them with continuing education.
Tedious Auto Repair is a NAPA Gold AutoCare Center — the highest tier in the NAPA AutoCare program. This requires meeting strict quality standards, providing the 3-year/36,000-mile nationwide warranty, and using NAPA Premium quality parts. The Gold designation is held by a small subset of independent shops nationally.
Three technicians at Tedious, including Buddy, went through Honda factory training programs to become Honda-trained mechanics. This expertise has expanded over the years to cover essentially every major manufacturer — Toyota, Ford, GM, Chrysler/Dodge/Ram/Jeep, Subaru, Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Mazda, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, and beyond.
Buddy has worked on vehicles in the Chico/Butte County area continuously since starting Tedious in 2007. That includes seeing the same makes and models across multiple decades, knowing which problems develop on local vehicles, understanding the specific stresses of Chico driving (Skyway grades, summer heat, wildfire-affected vehicles), and building relationships with customers who've been bringing their vehicles in for over a decade.
Buddy personally sets the diagnostic approach for the shop — how techs use scan tools, when to escalate from scan to live data to component testing, when to call a head gasket HC test, when to commit to a tear-down. The diagnostic procedures published on this site reflect what actually happens in the bay, not generic auto-repair-blog content.
Every job that leaves the shop has been verified to meet Tedious quality standards. Buddy reviews complex repairs personally before vehicles are released. The 3-year/36,000-mile NAPA warranty is backed by quality work, not just the warranty card — warranty returns are rare because the work is done right the first time.
Newer techs at the shop train under Buddy and the more experienced staff. The shop's reputation depends on every tech doing the work to the same standard. Mentorship covers not just technical skill but also how to communicate with customers, how to write clear written estimates, and how to deliver bad news honestly when a repair is more involved than the customer expected.
The technical content published on tediousrepairs.com — the authority guides, the diagnostic procedures, the maintenance schedules, the symptom troubleshooting — is reviewed by Buddy before publication. Where this site cites specific procedures or specifications, those reflect what actually gets done at 2695 CA-32. No filler, no AI hallucination, no generic content scraped from competitor blogs.
Customers should know exactly what's wrong, what we're recommending, what it will cost, and why. Written estimates before work begins. No surprises. If a job is going to cost more than estimated, the customer hears it before the additional work happens, not after. This is the foundation of everything else.
The shop is built around real diagnostic work, not parts-cannon repair. When a customer comes in with a check engine light, we don't guess at the most likely failed part and replace it. We diagnose the root cause, document our findings in writing, get customer approval for the work, and then perform the repair. This costs slightly more upfront but saves customers from paying for unnecessary parts.
NAPA Premium parts when available. OEM where it matters (timing components, electronics, emissions). We don't compete on price by installing the cheapest parts — we deliver value through parts that last and work that's done right. The 3-year/36,000-mile warranty depends on this.
Every customer gets a free 100-point digital inspection on every visit — photos, video, written documentation. The goal is transparency. The customer sees exactly what we see when their vehicle is on the lift. No upselling pressure. Just honest documentation of what we found.
Tedious is a Chico shop serving Chico-area customers. We're not part of a national chain. We're not corporate-owned. The owner answers the phone sometimes. The mechanics who work on your car live in Chico. We see customers around town. That accountability is built into how the shop operates.
Whether you need a diagnostic on a check engine light, a brake job, an oil change, a pre-purchase inspection on a used vehicle you're considering, or major repair work on a high-mileage daily driver — the Tedious team is here. Same-day appointments are often available. Walk-ins welcome for quick services. Drop-off available for longer repairs. The shop has comfortable waiting room with a saltwater aquarium for shorter waits, and loaner vehicles available for repairs that take longer.

Buddy Rausch's automotive career began in the late 1990s, working his way up through dealership and independent shop environments. He learned from master techs and continuously invested in his own training through manufacturer programs, ASE certifications, and ongoing education through NAPA and aftermarket training networks. By 2007 he had the experience and resources to open Tedious Auto Repair as his own shop.
Buddy holds ASE Master Technician certification — a credential requiring passing comprehensive tests in eight separate automotive specialty areas (engine repair, automatic transmission, manual transmission and drive axles, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical/electronic systems, heating and air conditioning, and engine performance). Master certification requires ongoing recertification every five years, so the credential reflects current automotive knowledge, not a one-time achievement from years ago.
Operating a NAPA Gold AutoCare Center requires meeting the highest tier of NAPA's certification program. This includes AAA-approved facility standards, certified technicians, equipment requirements, ongoing training, and customer satisfaction metrics that NAPA audits. Not every NAPA-affiliated shop earns Gold tier — it requires demonstrating ongoing commitment to quality.
Buddy continues to invest in training because automotive technology evolves rapidly. Recent training areas include electric vehicle high-voltage systems, hybrid powertrain diagnostics, modern direct-injection engine carbon cleaning, ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) calibration, and updated diagnostic tooling. The shop tools and his knowledge stay current with what's on the road.
Beyond general repair, Buddy has deep specialty knowledge in diesel engines (Duramax, Powerstroke, Cummins — full diagnostic and repair capability), European applications (BMW, Mercedes, Audi — with proper tooling), CVT transmissions (Nissan, Subaru, Toyota, Honda — with manufacturer-specific fluid procedures), and hybrid/EV high-voltage systems. The breadth of expertise comes from 18+ years of working on everything that came through the bay.
Unlike many shop owners who transition entirely to management, Buddy remains hands-on with diagnostics and complex repairs. Every job at Tedious Auto Repair is either performed by Buddy directly or by certified techs working under his supervision. When a customer describes an intermittent problem or unusual symptom, Buddy is involved in the diagnostic process. This is why customers come back — and why their family members and friends come too.
About 25% of repair requests Tedious receives turn out to have a different root cause than the customer expected. Customers describe "alternator failure" that turns out to be wiring corrosion. "Transmission slip" that is actually motor mount failure. "Engine knock" that is a failed timing chain tensioner. Honest diagnosis saves customers money and builds the relationships that grow our business through word-of-mouth.
We use NAPA Gold or premium aftermarket parts on most applications, OEM parts where they matter (European vehicles, certain Asian applications). Bargain parts often fail within months and cost more in repeat labor than quality parts cost upfront. The total cost over time is lower with quality parts even when the initial bill is slightly higher.
Every fluid, every torque value, every replacement part is installed to manufacturer specification. Wrong fluid causes premature failure. Wrong torque damages components. Wrong parts fit poorly and fail. We look up specifications by VIN and follow them — even when it costs us more to source the correct part.
Estimates are ranges (because actual condition determines actual cost) but we never exceed quoted ranges without customer approval. If we find something unexpected during the work — a snapped exhaust bolt, a seized component, a related failure — we call, explain, photograph, and get approval before any additional billable work begins. No surprises on the final invoice.
We explain what we found, what we recommend, and why. Our 100-point digital inspection includes photo and video documentation of conditions — customers see what we see. This isn't a sales tactic; it's information that helps customers make informed decisions about their vehicles. Some customers approve all the recommended work; some defer items; some decline. We respect their judgment.
We're building a business on repeat customers and referrals, not on transactions. A customer who comes once and never returns is a failure for us. The customers who come for 10+ years, bring their family, refer their coworkers — those are the relationships that built Tedious Auto Repair into a 4.9-star, 714-review business. Our entire approach is designed to earn that kind of loyalty.
California smog certification requires specific licensing we don't carry. Many shops position themselves as one-stop, but the licensing rules limit what most independents can do. We do pre-smog inspections, diagnose check engine lights that cause smog failure, and repair the underlying issues. Then you take your vehicle to a licensed smog station for the actual certification. Honest scope is better than misleading service.
Diagnostic fees pay for the time and expertise required to identify the actual problem. Shops that "credit diagnostic to repair" are typically pricing repair higher to make up for the supposedly free diagnostic. We charge diagnostic at $199.99/hour because that's what proper diagnosis costs. The repair is priced separately and fairly. The customer gets transparent pricing on both.
Brake pads and rotors wear together. Replacing only pads on glazed or grooved rotors causes accelerated pad wear, brake noise, and poor stopping. We replace pads and rotors together per axle. This is the proper repair. Customers who insist on pads-only sometimes go elsewhere; we'd rather lose the job than do work we know won't last.
Universal CVT fluid kills CVT transmissions. Nissan needs NS-3, Subaru needs Subaru High Torque, Honda needs HCF-2, Toyota needs CVT-FE. Wrong fluid causes shudder, slip, and eventual transmission failure costing $4,000-7,000. We use manufacturer-specific fluid only. Period.
Brake fluid that should be flushed gets flushed. Suspension components that should be replaced get replaced. Tires that are unsafe get flagged for replacement. We tell customers what their vehicle actually needs, document our findings with photos, and let them decide — but we don't downplay safety concerns to save them money on this visit. Our reputation is built on doing things right.
Last quarter we sent away many customers who came in expecting major repairs after we found cheaper actual fixes. Customer thought they needed an alternator — turned out to be a corroded ground wire. Customer thought transmission rebuild — turned out to be motor mounts. Honest diagnosis means saying "you don't need that" sometimes, even when it costs us the bigger job.
Tedious Auto Repair has been a fixture in Chico's local business community since 2007. We participate in local business networking, support local sports teams and school programs through sponsorships, and contribute to the local economy through our employees, suppliers, and community involvement. When you support Tedious, you're supporting a Chico family-owned business.
Buddy enjoys his own time working on personal project vehicles — diesel trucks and performance cars among them. This hands-on enthusiasm carries over to how he runs the business: we work on the vehicles customers care about, not just the ones that are easy. Diesel trucks, European exotics, hybrids, EVs, classic restorations — all welcome.
Over 714 Google reviews represent hundreds of Chico-area families who trust Tedious Auto Repair with their vehicles. Many customers have been with us for over a decade. Many bring their entire families — parents, kids, siblings, spouses. Many refer their coworkers. The trust accumulates over time, vehicle by vehicle, year by year. That's the relationship we work to earn.
Customers regularly want to discuss their vehicles directly with Buddy. He's accessible — at the shop, by phone, or through our Free Quote online form. For ongoing or complex situations, he stays personally involved in the diagnostic and repair process. New customers welcome — call (530) 826-4275 or visit the shop at 2695 CA-32 in Chico.
Dealerships have their place — warranty work, recalls, sometimes specialized programming. But for everyday service, repair, and even complex diagnostics, an independent ASE Master Tech with proper tooling provides better value: same quality work, often significantly less expensive, and a relationship with a tech who personally knows your vehicle. That's the model Tedious Auto Repair was built on.
