Alternator Repair In Chico, CA

What is an alternator? An alternator is a charging device that delivers electricity to your battery. Your vehicle’s alternator powers the electrical system of your truck.

It’s like a generator! Cars all have a little generator in them. In your vehicle, the battery is not the primary source of power; the battery is just a storage device for DC voltage. The primary power source is your Alternator!

The Alternator charges your battery which then, the battery can power the rest of your vehicle. People often think that when their battery light comes on, it is because of an issue. Although this can be the case, your Alternator is usually the issue. Alternators and batteries are replaced together!

Did you know that your battery stores electricity? Enough to start your engine and get you moving! But that’s about it! You can only get a few miles on battery power alone.

It would help if you had an alternator to generate enough electricity to run your engine and power your electrical accessories like the stereo, power seats, heater fan, onboard computers, etc.

On top of that, the Alternator needs to recharge your battery. So, when your Alternator isn’t working correctly, there isn’t enough electricity for all those things.

Alternator Testing Near Me

So why would your alternator not work? Usually, they’ve worn out. Alternators are driven by your serpentine belt and spin 2 to 3 times faster than the engine. That’s a lot of work! In addition, the bearings wear out, as do the copper wire coils and magnets that generate the electricity.

There’s no sense in hobbling along with an alternator that’s not working properly. It will fail at some point and leave you stranded. If your alternator is bad, replace it as soon as possible to ensure the entire vehicle’s operation.

Your service technician will install an alternator that meets your manufacturer’s specifications. However, some customers use a lot of additional electrical objects in their vehicles. Some electrical things include; computers, DVD players, power inverters, and radios! If that sounds like you, talk with your service advisor about upgrading to a more heavy-duty alternator to meet your needs.

Highly recommend this shop! The owner is super friendly and was able to get my car in for a brake job the day that I called. It turned out to be extra work than we had initially thought and, once approved, they had no problem taking care of the extra work immediately. They also did a full car inspection with descriptions and pictures sent straight to my phone. The up front communication and honesty were both greatly appreciated. Brake price was the best that I found in town after much research. I will definitely be back for future repairs!

How Do Alternators Work?

The alternator alternates in circles to generate its power. The power generated from this is called AC. Before the alternator can transfer this power into the battery, it needs to change it into direct control, or DC.

The alternator will convert mechanical energy from the engine into electricity to power the battery, lights, wipers, and everything in between! The battery is not that important. All it does is assist in starting the vehicle and powering electrical accessories.

The alternator is bolted onto the side of your engine! It is this little thing that can generate power for your whole vehicle! Next, the alternator is connected to the crankshaft by a belt. This spins the little rotor inside the alternator.

There is a series of magnets that spin its north poles and south poles. This is placed inside the rotor. Little copper wires surround the entire thing. When the attractions pass over the wires, it makes an electromagnetic current! This creates a whole ton of electricity!

At idle, your car will need more than just a DC to start! That’s why we use alternators!

Alternator History

An alternator keeps your engine running after it’s been started. An alternator will power all most all of your car’s electrical system. It powers the radio, the headlights, the windows, and more. Also, the alternator acts as a charger and charges your battery!

Did you know that there are different types of alternators? There are Diesel electronic alternators, DC alternators, brushless alternators, radio alternators, and more! The DC alternator is the most common in cars!

Did you know that the first-ever alternator was used during World War Two? Even if it wasn’t used in cars, it was still beneficial! They used the alternator to power their equipment!

The first alternator was made in 1832. Hippolyte Pixi invented it. However, Pixi’s automotive inventions didn’t end there. After making the alternator, he made marine alternators, radio alternators, automobile alternators, and more.

In 1891, Nikola Tesla invented another type of alternator. It was called the 15 kHz generator. This alternator could deliver electric currents to multiple different phases!

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CAR GENERATOR AND A CAR ALTERNATOR

An alternator is an automotive device that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy by taking power from your engine and using it to control the car’s electrical system. Generators take mechanical energy and restore power to alter current or directing current.

AC AND DC CURRENT

AC (altering current) and DC (direct current) are different types of power. AC power is the kind you would find inside a house, a workplace, or more important things! AC will bounce back and forth between being negative and positive. This happens because of the electrons!

Direct current will be found in your car. DC can be used to power more minor things. Since the average vehicle is 14.7 feet long, DC can flow through the wires and easily be able to power your car!
