The belt tensioner keeps the serpentine belt under constant correct tension. When the spring weakens or bearing fails, the tensioner bounces, allowing the belt to slip, squeal, and wear unevenly. The automatic belt tensioner maintains correct serpentine belt tension throughout the belt's life as it stretches. A spring-loaded arm with a smooth bearing pulley on the end — it applies constant pressure to the belt's slack side. On older vehicles with non-automatic tensioners, belt tension was adjusted manually; modern tensioners self-adjust. When the tensioner spring weakens or the pivot bearing fails, belt tension becomes erratic — too loose (belt slips) or the tensioner bounces (belt vibrates).
A tensioner with a weak spring or worn damper allows the arm to oscillate — the pulley bounces instead of holding steady pressure. This causes the belt to flutter, slap, and eventually jump off its track. Visible when looking at the engine bay with it running — the tensioner arm moves up and down rhythmically instead of holding still.
The tensioner has a bearing-mounted pulley identical to the idler pulley — it can develop bearing noise as it wears. Squealing or chirping that tracks with RPM. The tensioner pulley and idler pulley often fail at similar mileages since they're in the same thermal environment and subject to the same belt loads.
A tensioner that can no longer maintain adequate belt tension allows the belt to slip across the accessory pulleys — alternator undercharges, AC compressor slips, power steering loses assist, and water pump underflows. The belt may squeal under load (AC on, heavy electrical draw) and eventually slip off completely.
When we replace a serpentine belt, we inspect the tensioner and idler pulley for play, bounce, and bearing noise. If any of the three show wear, we recommend replacing all three — they're at the same mileage and the labor to access them is identical. A new belt on a worn tensioner fails in 10,000–20,000 miles as the worn tensioner allows it to slip and wear unevenly.

With the engine off, press on the tensioner arm — it should have spring resistance and return firmly. A tensioner that flops easily has a weak spring. With engine running, observe the tensioner arm — it should be nearly stationary. An arm that bounces or oscillates has a failed damper.
