Blower motor replacement Chico CA. No airflow = motor failed. High speed only = resistor. Grinding = bearing failure. Cottonwood debris common. (530) 826-4275.
No air from your vents on any setting = blower motor failure. Works only on high speed = blower motor resistor — less expensive and more common. Grinding from behind the dash = bearing failure. Chico's cottonwood packs blower squirrel cages and accelerates motor wear. Same-day repair in most cases.

✅ Blower Motor Replace
A blower motor failure in Chico means your heater, AC, and defrost all stop working — the blower is the fan that moves air through the HVAC system regardless of heating or cooling mode. Symptoms: no airflow on any setting, airflow only on high speed (blower motor resistor failure — most common), or a grinding/squealing noise from behind the dashboard. Blower motor or resistor replacement is typically same-day.
The HVAC system makes no sound and produces no airflow when any fan speed is selected. The blower motor has failed completely — the electric motor that drives the fan has burned out. Without the blower running, AC and heat both produce no output regardless of temperature setting.
The blower works on speed 4 (high) but not on speeds 1, 2, or 3. This is a blower motor resistor failure — not the motor itself. The resistor controls lower fan speeds by adding electrical resistance. When it fails, only the direct full-voltage connection (high speed) continues to work. Very common failure, often less expensive than the motor itself.
A grinding, rattling, or squealing sound when the fan is running indicates the blower motor bearing is failing. The motor still turns but with increasing friction. A leaf, cottonwood fiber pack, or debris in the squirrel cage can also cause rattling. Inspect and replace before the motor seizes completely.
Weak airflow on all speeds despite the fan running is almost always a severely clogged cabin air filter — not the blower motor. Chico's cottonwood and agricultural dust can pack a cabin filter solid within 12,000 miles. We inspect the cabin filter first before any blower motor diagnosis.
Chico's cottonwood trees drop significant fiber every spring. Cottonwood that bypasses the cabin filter (or enters through the fresh air intake during high-flow periods) can pack into the blower squirrel cage. A clogged squirrel cage causes the motor to overwork, increasing heat and accelerating bearing failure. We clean the squirrel cage when replacing or inspecting the blower motor.
A blower motor running at full capacity for Chico's 4–5 month summer season ages faster than in mild climates. Heat cycling degrades the motor's brushes and bearings — we see blower motors failing at 80,000–100,000 miles in Chico that would last 120,000–150,000 in a mild climate.
We test resistor function before the motor — a $30–$60 resistor is far less expensive than a blower motor. If airflow only works on high speed, the resistor is almost certainly the cause.
Motor replacement typically requires removing the glove box and HVAC housing to access the motor. Most blower motor jobs are 1–2 hours. New motor run-in test confirms proper operation on all speeds before reassembly.
Every blower motor job includes inspection and cleaning of the squirrel cage fan — cottonwood and debris cleared before the new motor is installed.
Blower motor resistor failure — the resistor controls lower fan speeds by adding electrical resistance. When it fails, only the direct full-voltage connection (high speed) continues to work. Very common failure, usually less expensive than the motor itself.
If the fan is running (you can hear it) but airflow is weak, the cabin filter is likely clogged. If the fan makes no sound at all, the motor or resistor has failed. We inspect the cabin filter first on every HVAC complaint.
Yes — cottonwood that enters the fresh air intake packs into the blower squirrel cage, causing the motor to overwork and overheat. Spring cottonwood season (April–June) is the most common time we see blower motor failures from debris.
1–2 hours for most vehicles. The resistor is 30–45 minutes. We test on all fan speeds before reassembly.
