The Short Answer

Our Chico BYO oil change is $46.07 labor only. You supply the oil and filter; we handle everything else — drain, new filter torqued to spec, fluid top-offs, service-indicator reset, and a digital inspection with photos, included when performed. Same procedure as our standard service. It's the right fit for Euro, performance, diesel, and fleet owners sourcing their own specialty oil.

Transparent Pricing

BYO Oil Change Pricing

One labor-only rate. Same procedure as our standard service — same drain, same torque-to-spec, same digital inspection with photos, same documentation. The only difference is you supply the oil and the filter; we handle everything else.

What this means in plain terms: If you buy your oil at Walmart for $30 and a filter for $10, your total out-the-door cost is $46.07 + $40 in parts = $86.07 + applicable tax / disposal fee / card processing fee. Compared to our standard Compact Car full synthetic service at $89.98, BYO mostly makes sense when you're running specialty oil we don't routinely stock or you've found a particularly good sale on premium oil. Most customers come out roughly even at a Compact Car service; BYO mostly wins on Euro, performance, or specialty applications.

Pricing notes: Labor flat rate $46.07 covers up to standard service (drain, filter, refill, inspection, reset). Prices listed are estimates as of the date of this page’s publication; final cost depends on your specific vehicle and what we find during inspection, and we provide a written estimate before any work begins. All prices subject to applicable California sales tax, environmental disposal fee for used oil, and card processing fee if paying by credit/debit. Cash payment avoids card processing fees. Specialty applications requiring extended labor (Mopar Demon Crate engine, exotic supercar applications, vehicles requiring lift relocation, etc.) may be quoted at additional labor — we'll always tell you up front before any work begins. We don't install oil that we've verified to be incorrect for your vehicle's spec; if you bring 5W-30 for a vehicle that requires 0W-20, we'll flag the issue and let you decide how to proceed.

Who Uses BYO

Who BYO Service Is For

Most of our regular oil change customers don't need BYO — our standard $89.98 Compact Car full synthetic service is straightforward and well-priced. BYO makes economic and practical sense for specific situations.

  • Specialty Euro oil enthusiasts. Liqui Moly Top Tec 4200, Ravenol VSW SAE 5W-40, Motul 8100 X-cess, and similar premium Euro oils that we don't routinely stock at our Chico location. If you have a strong preference for a specific brand and you're willing to source it (Amazon, FCP Euro, ECS Tuning, BlauferGroup, etc.), BYO gets you the oil you want at our shop's labor rate.
  • Black Friday / holiday oil sale buyers. Mobil 1 5-quart jugs go on sale at Walmart for $19.99 a few times a year, particularly around Black Friday and back-to-school. OEM-spec filters go on sale similarly. If you stocked up at sale pricing, BYO lets you use those savings on labor at our shop without paying our standard markup on stocked oil.
  • Performance / track-day owners. Hellcat / 392 owners running Liqui Moly Synthoil for track use. BMW M owners running specific Castrol EDGE or Motul formulations. Subaru WRX / STi owners using AMSOIL Signature Series. Performance applications often benefit from oil specifications we don't routinely stock, and BYO keeps those owners served at our shop instead of pushing them to dealerships.
  • Oil enthusiasts and engine purists. Some customers care about oil chemistry and brand history at a level beyond what most service shops are equipped to discuss. They've done the research, they've read the data sheets, they want to use specifically what they want to use. BYO removes the back-and-forth and lets us do the work without trying to substitute.
  • Diesel enthusiasts running aftermarket additives. Customers running Hot Shot's Stiction Eliminator (6.0L Power Stroke), specific cetane boosters, fuel additive packages, or oil supplements. BYO lets you bring your specific additive program with you.
  • Vehicles with obscure spec requirements. Older vehicles that spec discontinued oil grades. Imports we don't routinely service. Restored classics with specific oil requirements (zinc-rich oils for flat-tappet camshaft applications). BYO lets you source the right product yourself.
  • Customers who buy in bulk for fleet use. A Chico contractor with five F-250 Power Strokes and a Cummins 2500 buys oil by the case directly from Shell or Mobil distributors. BYO lets fleet owners use their bulk-purchase pricing and pay our labor rate for the work.
  • Customers who simply prefer to control parts sourcing. Some people just like buying their own parts. We're not here to argue with that — we're here to do good work on your vehicle.

Same Service, Same Quality

What's Included with BYO Labor

BYO doesn't mean diminished service. Same procedure, same quality, same documentation as our standard oil change — you just bring the consumables.

🛡️Complete drain & refill

Engine warmed to operating temperature, drain plug removed, oil drained to completion (typically 15-20 minutes for full drain). Drain plug threads inspected, fresh crush washer (Euro applications), drain plug torqued to factory spec.

⭐Filter replacement

Old filter removed, new filter (your supplied filter) installed. Filter housing torqued to spec for cartridge filter applications. O-ring replaced from new filter's included parts on cartridge applications.

🔎Full digital inspection

Brakes, suspension, steering, belts, hoses, tires, lights, fluids, battery, exhaust, undercarriage, plus drivetrain-specific items for your vehicle. Same inspection as our standard service, no shortcuts.

📷Digital inspection report

Photos of every finding sent to your phone. Same report quality as our standard service.

🔌Fluid top-offs

Power steering, brake fluid, washer fluid, coolant overflow tank checked and topped off as needed (small fluid top-offs included; full fluid services quoted separately).

🔐Service indicator reset

Oil Life Monitor / service indicator reset per your vehicle's correct procedure. We know the resets for the major manufacturers.

📊Tire pressure check

All four tires checked, adjusted to door-jamb spec or your stated preference (spirited driving, towing, etc.). Spare tire pressure also checked.

📋Warranty-grade documentation

Invoice notes the oil brand and viscosity grade you supplied (we record what you brought), filter brand and part number, mileage, date, and any inspection findings. Suitable for your records and for future warranty claims.

🏁Verification check

We'll quickly verify your oil meets your vehicle's spec before installation — checking the bottle for the OEM approval your application requires (BMW LL-04, MS-12633, GM Dexos, etc.). If something is off-spec, we'll flag it and let you decide how to proceed.

What to Bring

What You Need to Bring

Show up with these items and the appointment goes smoothly. Show up missing something and we'll either need to source it ourselves (at our standard markup, defeating the purpose of BYO) or reschedule.

  1. Correct viscosity oil for your vehicle. Verify the viscosity grade against your owner's manual or the spec stamped on your oil filler cap. Common mistakes: bringing 5W-30 for a vehicle that specs 0W-20 (modern Toyota, Honda, GM) or bringing 10W-30 for a vehicle that specs 5W-20 (modern Ford). The viscosity grade matters for cold-start protection and fuel economy. We'll catch this before installation but it's easier if you've already verified.
  2. OEM-approved oil if your vehicle requires a specific approval. Euro applications require ACEA C3 plus the specific OEM approval (BMW LL-04, MB 229.51/229.52, VW 504.00/507.00, Porsche A40 / C30). Diesel applications require API CK-4 plus the specific approval (Cummins CES 20081, Mack EOS-4.5, GM Dexos D, Mopar MS-11106). Hellcat / 392 applications require Mopar MS-12633 / MS-A0921. The approval is printed on the back of every quality bottle. If your bottle doesn't list the required approval, it's the wrong oil for your vehicle.
  3. Sufficient quantity for your application capacity. Standard Compact Car: 4-5 quarts. V6 applications: 5-6 quarts. V8 applications: 6-7 quarts. Hellcat / 392: 7 quarts. Heavy-duty diesel: 12+ quarts. Better to bring slightly more than less. Unused oil goes home with you sealed.
  4. The correct oil filter for your application. Filter cross-references are vehicle-specific. Bring the OEM filter, the Wix / Mahle / Mann / Hengst equivalent, or an aftermarket filter you've verified fits your specific vehicle. Do not bring a "universal" filter or guess at filter sizing. The wrong filter doesn't seal correctly.
  5. Crush washer for Euro applications (recommended). Most BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and VW applications use aluminum crush washers on the drain plug that should be replaced at every change. Crush washers ship with most filter kits but not all. We'll have them as a backup but it's smoother if you bring a fresh one.
  6. Vehicle and keys, of course. Standard appointment with all the standard logistics. We can't service a vehicle that isn't there.

Verify First

How to Verify Your Oil Meets Spec

Before you check out at Walmart with that 5-quart jug of "European formula" 5W-30, take a minute to verify the back of the bottle. Five minutes of reading saves a wasted appointment.

Where the spec lives. Quality oil bottles list their certifications and approvals on the back of the bottle, usually in a panel headed "Specifications" or "Approvals" or "Performance Levels." This panel will list:

  • API category: SP, SN PLUS, SN, CK-4, FA-4, etc.
  • ILSAC category: GF-6A, GF-6B, GF-5, etc. (specifically applies to American gasoline applications)
  • ACEA category: A3/B4, C3, C5, C6, etc. (European spec)
  • OEM-specific approvals: BMW LL-04, MB 229.51, VW 504.00, Porsche A40 / C30, Mopar MS-12633, GM Dexos, Ford WSS-M2C947-A, etc.

What to verify before purchase:

  • For most American gasoline applications: API SP and ILSAC GF-6A printed on the bottle. Most modern full-synthetic oils carry these.
  • For Euro applications: ACEA C3 plus your specific OEM approval (BMW LL-04, MB 229.51/229.52, VW 504.00/507.00, etc.). "European formula" without the actual approval is marketing language — not a substitute.
  • For Hellcat / 392 / Mopar 0W-40: MS-12633 or MS-A0921 explicitly listed. Standard 0W-40 without this approval doesn't meet the spec.
  • For diesel applications: API CK-4 plus the specific OEM approval (CES 20081 for Cummins, EOS-4.5 for Mack, Dexos D for GM 3.0L LM2, MS-11106 for EcoDiesel).
  • For older vehicles: Backwards-compatible API category (e.g, API SP is backwards compatible with API SN, SM, SL, SJ, SH).

Common buying traps to avoid:

  • "Synthetic blend" labeling. Synthetic blend oils are typically conventional oil with 15-30% synthetic stock. They don't meet most modern OEM full-synthetic specifications. If your vehicle requires full synthetic, look for "Full Synthetic" prominently labeled.
  • "High mileage" formulations. These contain seal swell additives that may help leaking older engines but aren't appropriate for engines under 75,000 miles in good condition. They also typically don't carry full OEM approval lists.
  • Generic store-brand oil. Costco Kirkland Synthetic, Walmart SuperTech, and similar store brands are mostly fine for general use but their approval lists can be limited. Verify the back-label specifically against your vehicle's requirement.
  • Bottles that prominently say "RECOMMENDED FOR" rather than listing actual approvals. "Recommended for BMW, Mercedes, Audi" without the actual approval listed is marketing language. The bottle should say "MEETS BMW LL-04, MB 229.51..." with the explicit approval names.

If you're unsure, send us a picture of the back of the bottle before you buy. We'll tell you in 30 seconds whether it meets your vehicle's spec.

Filter Choice

Bringing Your Own Filter

Filter choice is as important as oil choice on most modern applications, especially Euro cartridge applications. Here's what to know about sourcing your own filter.

OEM-equivalent filter manufacturers worth sourcing:

  • Mahle: Major OEM supplier for BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, and others. The OE filter on many German applications. Available through Amazon, FCP Euro, ECS Tuning, Pelican Parts.
  • Mann-Filter (Mann+Hummel): Major OEM supplier for VW Group, BMW, Mercedes. Excellent value. Same sources as Mahle.
  • Hengst: Major OEM supplier for Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, particularly cartridge filter applications. Premium German filter brand.
  • UFI: Italian OEM supplier for FCA / Stellantis applications (Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Maserati). Less commonly stocked but readily available online.
  • Wix / Wix XP: American OEM supplier for many Mopar, Cummins, GM HD applications. Wix XP is the synthetic-media extended-protection line.
  • Donaldson: Premium HD diesel filter manufacturer. The OEM filter on many Cummins, Caterpillar, Detroit Diesel applications.
  • Motorcraft: Ford's OEM filter brand. Reliable choice for Ford / Lincoln applications.
  • ACDelco Professional: GM's OEM filter brand. Reliable choice for Chevy / GMC / Cadillac / Buick applications.
  • Mopar Genuine: Premium-priced but the actual OE filter for Hellcat / 392 / Demon / Trackhawk applications when warranty documentation matters most.

Filter brands to avoid for BYO:

  • Generic store-brand filters from Walmart, AutoZone, Pep Boys. Filter media construction varies wildly; some are fine but many are inadequate for high-performance or high-mileage applications. is the exception — it is Wix-equivalent and properly constructed.
  • Discount aftermarket filters at suspiciously low pricing. Filter counterfeiting is real, particularly on premium brands sold through third-party Amazon sellers. If a Mahle filter is selling for half the FCP Euro price, it's probably counterfeit.
  • "Universal" filters or filters cross-referenced from generic catalogs. Filter cross-references can be wrong, particularly for European applications. Verify the specific part number against your VIN.

If you bring a filter and we're uncertain about its quality or appropriateness, we'll flag the issue before installation and let you decide. We don't install filters we don't trust on customer vehicles.

vs Dealer BYO

BYO at Dealerships vs at Our Shop

Most dealerships will do BYO labor, but pricing varies dramatically. Here's what we see customers paying elsewhere and how our $46.07 compares.

BMW dealership BYO labor (typical Northern California): $95-$140. Some dealers refuse BYO entirely for "warranty protection" reasons that aren't actually warranty protection (Magnuson-Moss prevents tying warranty to OEM-only labor).

Mercedes-Benz dealership BYO labor: $100-$160. Similar reluctance at some dealerships; some will refuse without dealer-supplied oil.

Audi / VW dealership BYO labor: $80-$140 typical. Generally more cooperative than BMW or Mercedes-Benz dealers on BYO.

Porsche dealership BYO labor: $150-$250 typical for Porsche-specific applications. Often refused outright; Porsche dealerships usually require Porsche-specified oil installation.

Toyota / Honda / Nissan / Subaru / Mazda dealership BYO labor: $40-$70 typical. Most cooperative dealership tier on BYO.

Mopar dealership BYO labor: $60-$100 typical for Hellcat / 392 applications. Most cooperative for V8 applications.

Ford / Chevy / GMC dealership BYO labor: $40-$80 typical for diesel applications. Cooperation varies by dealership.

Our $46.07 BYO labor applies regardless of vehicle type. We'll do BYO on a Toyota Camry or a McLaren Senna at the same labor rate. The only exception is genuinely-extended-labor situations (Demon Crate engine, certain exotic applications requiring lift relocation) which we'll quote up front before any work begins.

The bigger picture: our standard $89.98 Compact Car full-synthetic service is competitively priced enough that BYO often doesn't save dramatic money for routine applications — the savings come on Euro, performance, and specialty applications where our stocked oil pricing reflects oil cost we don't markup heavily anyway. BYO mostly wins on:

  • Euro applications where you want a specific brand we don't routinely stock (Liqui Moly, Ravenol, Motul)
  • Performance applications running specialty oils (Motul 300V, Royal Purple HMX)
  • Sale-pricing windows where you can buy oil at $4-$6 per quart vs our $7-$12 per quart stocked pricing
  • Fleet applications where bulk oil purchases make BYO economically obvious

Warranty Protection

BYO & Warranty Protection

The most common concern about BYO is warranty protection. The good news is the law is on your side — provided the oil and filter you bring meet manufacturer specifications.

The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 (federal law, 15 U.S.C. § 2302(c)) prohibits manufacturers from voiding warranties simply because you used independent service or non-OEM-brand parts that meet manufacturer specifications. In BYO context:

  • Your factory warranty cannot be voided for using oil and filter that meet manufacturer specifications, regardless of where the service was performed or where the oil was purchased.
  • Your warranty cannot be voided for using independent service over dealer service, even when warranty work is later required.
  • The manufacturer can deny warranty coverage if they prove the specific aftermarket part or service caused the specific failure being claimed. This is a high bar — they need actual evidence, not just "you didn't use our parts."

What protects you in a BYO scenario:

  • Bring oil that meets your vehicle's specific OEM approval requirement (BMW LL-04, MB 229.51, VW 504.00, MS-12633, Dexos D, etc, as applicable). Generic "5W-30 synthetic" without the OEM approval doesn't meet the standard.
  • Bring a quality OEM-equivalent or better filter (Mahle, Mann, Hengst, Wix, Donaldson, Motorcraft, ACDelco, Mopar Genuine).
  • Keep your receipt for the oil and filter purchase. The receipt documents what you bought; combined with our invoice noting what we installed, that's the proof you used spec-compliant parts.

What we document on every BYO invoice:

  • Oil brand and product name (e.g, "Customer-supplied Liqui Moly Top Tec 4200 5W-30")
  • Viscosity grade (e.g, "SAE 5W-30")
  • Specifications visible on the bottle (e.g, "ACEA C3, BMW LL-04, MB 229.51, VW 504.00")
  • Filter brand and part number (e.g, "Customer-supplied Mahle OX 254D2")
  • Service mileage and date
  • Next service due (mileage and date)

This is your proof of compliance with manufacturer specifications — exactly what you'd need if a warranty claim is ever questioned. We've been operating in Chico for 19 years and have never had a customer's warranty denied for our work, BYO or otherwise.

BYO Questions

BYO Oil Change FAQs from Chico Drivers

How much does a BYO oil change cost in Chico?

BYO labor-only service is $46.07. You supply the oil and the filter; we perform all the labor including drain, filter replacement, refill, full digital inspection with photos, fluid top-offs, and service indicator reset.

What kind of oil should I bring?

Whatever oil meets your vehicle OEM specification. Verify the back of the bottle lists the specific approval your application requires. For Euro applications: ACEA C3 plus the specific OEM approval (BMW LL-04, MB 229.51, VW 504.00). For Hellcat/392: MS-12633 0W-40. For diesel: API CK-4 plus the manufacturer-specific approval.

Will BYO void my factory warranty?

No. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 prohibits manufacturers from voiding warranties for using non-OEM-brand parts that meet manufacturer specifications. We document oil brand, viscosity, approvals listed, filter brand, mileage, and date on every BYO invoice.

Do I need to bring a filter too?

Yes, the BYO labor rate is for BYO oil and filter, both supplied by you. If you bring oil but no filter, we can source a filter at our standard parts pricing, but it partially defeats the BYO purpose.

Do I save money with BYO?

Sometimes. For routine American applications, our $89.98 Compact Car service is competitively priced enough that BYO often does not save dramatic money. BYO mostly wins on Euro applications, performance applications running specialty oils, sale pricing windows for premium oil, or fleet applications with bulk pricing.
