Cabin Air Filter

Cabin Air Filter

You’re driving around one day, and you notice a weird smell. Check your armpits: nope. Did the cheeseburger roll under the seat? Nope. Did the kids fart? Yes, but that’s not what the scent is. Nothing else smells weird in the cabin, but what is it?
This is one of the most common questions we get:

Question

My car smells terrible when I run the heater or air conditioner. My friend said I might need a new cabin air filter – what’s that?

Cabin Air Filter Replacement

An air filter is a special filter that cleans the air that comes into your vehicle’s passenger compartment – or cabin –. Most new cars now have an air filter.

A cabin air filter catches dust, pollen, spores, and other pollutants before they can enter your cabin. It’s like the filter on your furnace, cleaning the air you breathe inside.

As you can imagine, it eventually gets filled up and can even get smelly. So – you have it replaced. Some are easy to access, and others are tougher to get to. Your service technician will be able to take care of it for you.

Your owner’s manual likely recommends when to replace the cabin filter. If you live and drive where there is a lot of dust, pollen, or pollution, the filter will fill up quickly. Of course, if you’re getting a lousy odor, bring it to the attention of your service advisor.  Stop by our auto repair shop in Chico, CA!
