Independent Chevy and GMC specialist in Chico since 2007. Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Camaro, Corvette, Colorado, Canyon. 5.3L/6.2L AFM lifter diagnosis and repair, AFM delete kits, 10L80 transmission service, Duramax diesel. No dealer required.
Tedious Auto Repair is Chico's Chevy and GMC specialist. The AFM/DFM lifter failure on 5.3L and 6.2L engines is the most common GM repair we perform — from $2,499.99 repair or $549.99 AFM delete to prevent it. 10L80/10L90 10-speed service at $149.99. 3.6L timing chain. Duramax diesel service. Carbon cleaning on LT1/LT2 Corvette and Camaro V8.
5.3L and 6.2L Gen V V8 with AFM/DFM cylinder deactivation: documented lifter failure at 80,000–150,000 miles — the most common GM repair we perform. 6.2L: upgrade to AFM-delete kit highly recommended. 10L80/10L90 10-speed transmission service at 45,000 miles (earlier than GM's recommendation in Chico heat). Duramax diesel: see diesel page.
Same 5.3L/6.2L AFM/DFM lifter concern as Silverado — large heavy SUVs work the engine harder, accelerating lifter wear. Air ride suspension on Premier/High Country trims: compressor and strut service. 10-speed transmission service. Coolant system maintenance on high-mileage examples.
2.5L/3.6L gas and 2.8L Duramax diesel (2016–2022). 2.5L: timing chain stretch with extended oil intervals. 3.6L: AFM lifter issue less severe than 5.3L but present. 2.8L Duramax: Dexos D 0W-20 at $199.99, fuel filter every 15,000 miles, EGR system service.
LT1 6.2L V8: direct injection, carbon cleaning at 60,000–80,000 miles. LT4 supercharged (ZL1): aggressive service intervals, 5W-50 full synthetic. 3.6L V6: timing chain stretch on high-mileage examples. 10-speed manual (ZL1 1LE) and automatic service.
1.5T and 2.0T turbocharged 4-cyl (Equinox): direct injection carbon cleaning. 1.5T has documented oil consumption on early examples — GM issued extended warranty. 3.6L V6 (Traverse): timing chain, AFM concern. CVT on base Equinox: 30,000-mile service.
LT1 and LT2 6.2L naturally aspirated: direct injection, strict 5,000-mile Dexos 2 full synthetic intervals. LT4/LT6 supercharged: 5W-50 full synthetic, more aggressive intervals for track use. C8 mid-engine: shorter oil change intervals required. Alignment critical after any suspension modification.
GM's Active Fuel Management (AFM) and Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) deactivate cylinders to improve fuel economy. The deactivating lifters (DoD lifters) collapse when active and have a documented failure rate — oil passages clog, lifters fail to pump up, and the camshaft lobe wears flat. This is the single most common repair we do on GM trucks.
Affected: 2007+ 5.3L Silverado/Sierra/Tahoe/Suburban/Yukon, 6.2L to a lesser extent. Symptoms: ticking that worsens, misfires, eventual P0300 random misfire or specific cylinder codes.
AFM lifter repair: from $2,499.99 · AFM delete kit: $349–$499 + 2hr labor (prevention)
Related to AFM/DFM: the deactivated cylinders don't seal as well as active cylinders, allowing oil to enter the combustion chamber. Many 5.3L owners lose 1 quart per 2,000–4,000 miles. GM issued extended warranty coverage on some model years — check your VIN before paying for repairs.
GM's 10-speed automatic in 2018+ Silverado, Tahoe, and Camaro has documented harsh shift and shudder complaints. Most resolve with a Dexron-HP fluid change and PCM calibration update. We run GM MDI2-level scans to check for available calibrations before recommending mechanical repair.
10L80 service: $149.99
The GM 3.6L LFX/LGX V6 develops timing chain stretch at 100,000–150,000 miles, especially if oil change intervals were extended. Symptoms: P0016/P0017 codes, cold start rattle, rough idle. Chain replacement requires significant disassembly — $2,499–$3,499 depending on which chain set needs replacement.

GM's Active Fuel Management deactivates 4 cylinders to save fuel. The special DoD lifters that enable this have a high failure rate — they collapse and the cam lobe wears flat. Symptoms are ticking and eventual misfires. Repair is $2,499+. Prevention is an AFM delete kit ($549.99) or strict 5,000-mile synthetic oil intervals.
$89.98 full synthetic Dexos 2 0W-20 for all gas V6 and V8 models. Colorado 2.8L Duramax diesel is $199.99 Dexos D. Includes free 100-point digital inspection with photos.
A brief cold-start tick that clears up in 10–20 seconds can be normal valve train behavior. A tick that persists, worsens over time, or is accompanied by a misfire code is likely AFM lifter failure — diagnose it now before it progresses to cam damage.
Yes — all Duramax variants LB7 through L5P. Oil change, fuel filter, EGR service, injector testing, DPF cleaning. See our diesel repair page for full detail.
No. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prevents GM from requiring dealer-only service. We use Dexos 2 / Dexos D specification fluids, document all work, and your warranty remains valid.
Every 45,000 miles in Chico conditions — Silverado towing and Tahoe city driving both accelerate fluid degradation. GM's recommendation is longer but their 'lifetime' claim doesn't account for severe service. We also check for available PCM calibration updates that can address shift quality complaints.
