Coolant Color Guide: Green, Orange, Pink, Blue, Yellow, Purple — What Each Means

Every coolant color explained — with the critical caveat that color is just dye, not chemistry. Green can be IAT, OAT, or HOAT depending on the manufacturer. Orange is usually GM Dex-Cool. Pink is usually Toyota SLLC. Blue is Honda or Subaru OAT. Yellow/gold is usually Ford or VW. Purple is Mopar. But always verify the specification, not just the color.

The Short Answer

Every coolant color explained — but remember, the color is just dye. Two coolants can be the same color and completely different chemistries, or different colors and identical formulations. Use this guide as a starting point, then verify against your owner's manual specification.

Green Coolant — IAT and Some OAT

Traditional IAT Green — Older Vehicles

The original antifreeze color, used from the 1950s through the early 1990s in virtually all vehicles. Chemistry: IAT (inorganic additive technology) with silicates and phosphates. Life: 2 years or 30,000 miles — the silicate film depletes quickly. Best suited for older vehicles with cast iron blocks and copper/brass radiators where silicate film protection is important. Still correct for vehicles manufactured before ~1995 and for certain modern vehicles that specifically require IAT.

Green — Kia, Hyundai, Some BMW

Kia and Hyundai specify a green coolant that is HOAT (hybrid OAT), not traditional IAT — it's green but contains organic acid inhibitors and has a 5-year life. Some BMW models specify a green or blue-green coolant that is Si-OAT (silicate-OAT), not IAT. Green does not automatically mean short-life traditional formula. Always verify the specification, not just the color.

Modern Green Universal

Several manufacturers now produce green universal coolants using OAT or HOAT chemistry — they're green because consumers associate green with coolant, not because they're IAT. These have 5-year lifespans. Azure by LubeMaster is available in green formulation in some markets. The color is marketing; the chemistry is what matters.

Orange Coolant — GM Dex-Cool OAT

GM Dex-Cool — Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, Cadillac, Oldsmobile, Saturn

Orange is most strongly associated with GM's Dex-Cool, introduced in 1995 as the first mass-market OAT coolant in American vehicles. Chemistry: straight OAT (no silicates). Life: 5 years or 150,000 miles. Dex-Cool has a sometimes negative reputation from early formulations that reacted with certain gasket materials — a real but now-resolved issue in modern formulations. Current Dex-Cool and Dex-Cool-compatible OAT coolants are reliable and long-lasting.

What NOT to Mix with Orange Dex-Cool

Adding green IAT coolant to a Dex-Cool system is the classic mixing mistake. Silicates from the IAT react with the organic acid inhibitors in OAT systems, and in higher concentrations can form a gel-like sludge. This is one case where the mixing warning is real and worth heeding. A universal coolant compatible with OAT can be added safely — but never green IAT in an orange Dex-Cool system.

Pink Coolant — Toyota, Honda, Some Subaru

Toyota SLLC (Super Long Life Coolant) — Pink/Red

Toyota's OAT formulation, used since around 2004 on most Toyota and Lexus models. Chemistry: OAT with carboxylate inhibitors, no silicates, no phosphates. Color: bright pink or light red. Life: 10 years or 100,000 miles initial fill; 5 years or 50,000 miles after first change. Toyota SLLC is one of the longer-lived coolant specifications. Compatible with OAT-based universals including Azure by LubeMaster.

Honda Type 2 — Blue and Also Older Blue-Green

Honda uses a blue OAT coolant (Type 2) in most 2013+ models. Older Honda models used a dark blue-green that was closer to IAT chemistry. The transition from the older dark green/blue to the modern blue OAT happened progressively across Honda's lineup. Always verify model year — a 2010 Honda uses a different spec than a 2015 Honda.

Subaru Blue OAT

Subaru specifies a proprietary blue OAT coolant for most models. It's often labeled 'Subaru Genuine Coolant' or similar, and is a phosphate-free OAT. Compatible with OAT-based universal coolants. The blue color is Subaru-specific — other manufacturers' blue coolants may have different specifications.

Yellow / Gold Coolant — Ford, VW, Audi

Ford VC-7-A — Yellow/Gold

Ford specifies a yellow/gold HOAT coolant for most models since the mid-2000s. Chemistry: HOAT (hybrid OAT) with silicates and organic acids. Life: 5 years or 150,000 miles. Compatible with HOAT-based universal coolants. Ford's yellow is distinct enough that it's a useful color identifier — but aftermarket yellow coolants vary in chemistry.

VW / Audi G12++ and G13 — Violet/Pink to Purple

Volkswagen and Audi have the most specific coolant requirements of any mainstream brand. G11 (blue-green, older), G12 (red, OAT), G12+ (red/pink, HOAT), G12++ (violet/pink, Si-OAT), G13 (violet, glycerin-based Si-OAT — partial bio-based formula). The G13 and G12++ are VW/Audi-specific and not easily substituted with universal coolants. For VW/Audi, we use the correct G-series coolant, not universal.

Purple Coolant — Mopar / Chrysler / FCA

Mopar MS-12106 and MS-9769 — Purple/Violet

Chrysler/Dodge/Ram/Jeep vehicles use a purple or violet HOAT coolant — often called 'HOAT G-05 type' or referencing Chrysler MS-12106. Life: 5 years or 150,000 miles. Compatible with HOAT-based universal coolants including Azure. The purple color was partly chosen to distinguish it clearly from Dex-Cool orange and IAT green. It works — purple Mopar coolant is easy to identify.

Why does my coolant color matter?

Color tells you approximately which chemistry you have — but it's not definitive. What matters is the chemistry (IAT, OAT, HOAT) because mixing incompatible chemistries can cause inhibitor reactions. Always verify your vehicle's specification from the owner's manual, not just the color in the reservoir.

What color coolant does most GM use?

Orange — GM Dex-Cool OAT, introduced in 1995. All Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, Cadillac, and most GM platforms since ~1996 use orange Dex-Cool or Dex-Cool-compatible OAT. Never add green IAT to an orange Dex-Cool system.

Why does Toyota use pink coolant?

Toyota chose a distinctive pink/red color for their Super Long Life Coolant (SLLC) to clearly differentiate it from green IAT and orange Dex-Cool. The chemistry is OAT. The color is just branding — no other functional significance.

Is purple coolant special?

Purple is Mopar's HOAT formulation (MS-12106) used in Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, and Jeep vehicles. It's a 5-year HOAT, compatible with HOAT-based universal coolants. The distinctive purple color makes identification easy.

Can I use green coolant in any car?

Only if your vehicle specifically requires IAT (traditional green). Adding green IAT to an OAT system (orange, pink, blue) risks silicate-organic acid reactions. If your car requires green, use green — but verify it's the correct IAT formulation for your vehicle, not a modern OAT or HOAT product that happens to be green.
