Clicking during turns is the classic outer CV joint failure. Clunking under acceleration is the inner joint. A torn boot caught early can save the joint — boot replacement from $149.99. Once the joint is clicking, full axle replacement from $249.99. Chico's parking lots and tight turns (East Avenue roundabouts) accelerate CV outer joint wear.
CV axle clicking during tight turns means the outer CV joint is failing. Clunking under hard acceleration is the inner joint. A torn boot caught before the joint wears allows a boot-only repair from $149.99. If the boot has been torn long enough for dirt to contaminate the joint, full axle replacement from $249.99 is the right call — a new boot on a worn joint fails again quickly. We photograph and flag torn boots at every oil change inspection.
The classic CV axle failure symptom: a click-click-click sound that appears during slow, tight turns — parking lots, U-turns, roundabouts. The clicking is the outer CV joint failing to transfer power smoothly through the extreme angle required during tight turns. Chico's urban driving — parking lots on East Avenue, roundabouts on Nord — is particularly hard on CV outer joints.
Confirms outer CV joint: clicking is most pronounced at low speed with the steering at full lock.
A clunk felt when accelerating from a stop — or a vibration that appears specifically under hard acceleration and smooths out at cruise — suggests the inner CV joint. The inner joint operates at a lesser angle than the outer joint but must transfer more torque, especially under hard acceleration.
The rubber boot protects the CV joint grease from contamination. A torn boot allows grease to be flung out and dirt to enter — the joint is then running dry and contaminated. Once a boot tears, you typically have 6–12 months before the joint fails completely, sometimes less in Chico's heat and dust.
Visible sign: Black grease flung onto the inside of the wheel and surrounding area. We photograph and flag torn boots at every 100-point digital inspection.
Boot replacement only (if joint is still good): from $149.99. Full axle replacement (joint damaged): from $249.99.
A failed inner CV joint produces a vibration that appears specifically under hard acceleration and may improve at cruise speed. This is different from wheel balance (appears at a specific speed range regardless of throttle) and different from engine mount (present at idle and in gear).
If the boot is torn but the CV joint has no clicking, no play, and smooth rotation — caught early — a boot replacement protects the joint and extends its life. From $149.99. We inspect the joint carefully before recommending boot-only service.
If the boot has been torn for any significant time, or if the joint is already clicking, the joint is contaminated and worn. A new boot on a contaminated joint fails again quickly. In this case, remanufactured axle replacement is the correct repair — from $249.99, includes both inner and outer joints and a new boot.
| Service | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| CV Boot Replacement (outer or inner) | From $149.99 | If joint is still good — no clicking. Protects joint, extends life. |
| CV Axle Replacement (reman) | From $249.99 | Full shaft including both joints and new boots. When joint is already worn or contaminated. |
| CV Axle Inspection | $199.99/hr | Confirms boot condition and joint wear before quoting boot vs axle. |
| Wheel Alignment (post-axle) | $169.99 | Recommended after axle replacement — subframe may be disturbed on some vehicles. |
Prices are estimates as of publish date and subject to additional labor and parts based on actual vehicle condition.
Clicking during slow, tight turns (parking lots, full-lock U-turns) = worn outer CV joint. Clunking or vibration under hard acceleration = worn inner CV joint. Grease flung onto the wheel = torn boot — catch this early to possibly save the joint.
Boot-only (joint still good) from $149.99. Full axle replacement (reman) from $249.99. Written estimate after confirming which repair is appropriate for joint condition. NAPA Gold 3-year warranty on parts.
With a torn boot and no clicking: yes for a short time — schedule soon. With clicking: yes for moderate distances, but the joint continues to wear and will eventually fail completely. With loud constant clicking at all speeds: replace soon — a completely failed joint can separate.
If the clicking just started and is only present at full steering lock during very tight turns, the joint may still be serviceable — we inspect it. If the joint has significant play or grease contamination, axle replacement is the right call. A new boot on a contaminated joint fails quickly.
We recommend checking alignment after CV axle replacement — accessing the axle on some vehicles disturbs inner tie rod adjustments. Our Hunter Hawkeye Elite alignment is $169.99. We advise after every axle job.
