Diesel hard start on cold Chico mornings (35–45°F) is most often glow plug or grid heater failure. Diesel engines have no spark plugs — combustion depends on compression heat alone after the glow system pre-heats the chamber. Failed glow plugs, low compression, air leaks, or fuel delivery problems are the main causes.
Diesel hard start — cranks more than normal, or won't start at all in cold weather — is most commonly caused by failed glow plugs or grid heater on Chico's cold winter mornings. Air in the fuel system (from a failed lift pump or loose fitting), low compression, or a failed crankshaft position sensor are less common but also diagnostic. We test in order of likelihood. The most common cause of diesel hard start in Chico's 35–45°F winter mornings. Current clamp draw test identifies failed glow plugs without removing any plug. For Cummins 5.9L, we test the grid heater relay and element separately. If the wait-to-start light function is abnormal, this is the first suspect.
Air in the fuel system causes hard start or no-start — diesel injection requires continuous, pressurized fuel flow. Air leaks at the primary filter housing, lift pump connections, or supply lines allow air to enter overnight. The engine cranks normally but won't fire until the air is purged. Fuel pressure testing at the injection pump inlet identifies this quickly.
Diesel ignition depends entirely on compression heat — unlike gasoline, there's no spark to assist. Low compression from worn rings, a failed injector cup (Cummins), or a bent valve allows the air-fuel mixture to ignite unreliably, especially when cold. Compression test identifies low-compression cylinders.
A failed crankshaft or camshaft position sensor can cause intermittent no-start or hard start — the ECM won't command injection without a valid position signal. Scan tool live data shows sensor output during cranking. Also: weak batteries (diesel trucks require high CCA) and corroded battery terminals cause slow cranking that appears as hard start.

Yes. Diesel engines require significantly higher starter current than gasoline engines. A weak battery that can't maintain adequate voltage during cranking slows the starter and reduces compression pressure — making starting harder, especially in cold weather. We load-test batteries at every oil change.
