Front differential, rear differential, limited-slip differential, and transfer case fluid service in Chico. The most commonly skipped drivetrain service — especially on work trucks and tow vehicles. Service every 30,000 miles for Chico severe service (towing, mountain roads, off-road). LSD vehicles require friction modifier in the gear oil or the clutch pack chatters. From $129.99 per differential.
Differential and transfer case fluid service is the most commonly skipped drivetrain maintenance — even at dealer service appointments. Every 30,000 miles for tow vehicles, off-road vehicles, and Butte County mountain road drivers (Paradise Skyway, Feather River Canyon routes). Limited-slip differentials require friction modifier in the gear oil or the clutch pack chatters on tight turns. From $129.99 per differential.
Every vehicle has at least one differential — it allows wheels on the same axle to rotate at different speeds when cornering. Without a differential, the inside wheel would hop in turns. Here's why service matters:
Present on FWD vehicles (in the transaxle), AWD vehicles, and 4WD trucks. On AWD vehicles, the front differential distributes power to the front axle independently of the rear. Gear oil service every 30,000–60,000 miles depending on use. Towing, off-road, and mountain road driving classify as severe service — 30,000-mile interval.
Present on RWD vehicles and 4WD/AWD trucks. Contains hypoid ring-and-pinion gears that transmit engine power to the rear wheels. Rear differentials on pickup trucks (Silverado, F-150, Tacoma, Tundra, RAM) see significant load from towing and payload — this is often the most neglected drivetrain service on work trucks.
Many trucks and performance vehicles have a limited-slip differential that provides some torque to the slipping wheel. LSDs require friction-modifier additive in the gear oil — without it, the clutch pack inside the diff chatters on tight turns and wears prematurely. We always check LSD application before adding gear oil.
4WD and AWD vehicles have a transfer case that distributes power between front and rear axles. The transfer case has its own fluid service interval — typically every 30,000–60,000 miles. Often skipped at dealer service appointments.
A whine or howl from the rear axle area that changes with vehicle speed (not engine speed) and worsens under acceleration or engine braking indicates worn differential gears — often from extended oil intervals or towing loads without proper service. A differential making noise needs immediate inspection — worn ring-and-pinion gears are expensive.
A clunk when engaging 4WD, a clunk during slow turns (in an LSD vehicle), or chattering on tight turns (LSD without friction modifier) all indicate differential issues. LSD chatter is the most common: the fix is a fluid service with the correct friction modifier — inexpensive, fast.
Dark brown or black gear oil indicates severe oxidation from extended service. Metallic particles (feels gritty) mean gear wear has contaminated the fluid. Milky fluid means water intrusion — common on vehicles driven through deep water or severe off-road terrain.

Every 30,000 miles for tow vehicles, off-road vehicles, and Chico mountain road drivers. Every 30,000–60,000 miles for normal use. Check your owner's manual for severe service interval — most Butte County driving qualifies.
Limited-slip differential chatter is a shudder or hop during slow, tight turns — caused by the LSD clutch pack engaging and releasing rapidly. Fix: drain the old gear oil and refill with the correct oil plus friction modifier additive. Inexpensive service. Don't let it go — continued chatter wears the clutch pack.
Yes — most FWD vehicles have a front differential integrated into the transaxle. The transaxle shares fluid with the transmission on some designs, but many have a separate front differential cavity requiring its own gear oil. We check the specific design for your vehicle before recommending service.
From $129.99 per differential. Transfer case from $99.99. Full drivetrain service (front + rear + transfer case) from $349.99 — recommended for high-mileage 4WD trucks that haven't had this done recently. Written estimate before any work.
Gear oil breaks down, loses its lubrication film, and allows metal-to-metal contact in the ring-and-pinion gears. The differential makes a whine or howl, then fails. Differential replacement on a truck is $600–$1,800 in parts alone. A $129.99 fluid service prevents it.
