Hemi 5.7L · 6.4L 392 · 6.2L Hellcat · Pentastar 3.6L. Written estimate before any work.
We work on all Dodge vehicles in Chico — Challenger, Charger, Durango, Dart, Grand Caravan. Every Dodge engine: Hemi 5.7L, 6.4L 392, 6.2L Hellcat/Redeye, and Pentastar 3.6L. Most common issues: MDS lifter tick on the 5.7L Hemi and oil cooler housing leak on the 3.6L Pentastar. For RAM trucks, see our RAM 1500/2500/3500 page →. Written estimate before any work. The classic muscle car. 5.7L MDS Hemi is the most common engine — MDS lifter tick is the #1 issue we diagnose. 6.4L 392 SRT/Scat Pack: more aggressive camshaft, no MDS. 6.2L Hellcat/Redeye supercharged: supercharger intercooler reservoir separate from the main cooling system — easy to overlook during fluid checks. Exhaust manifold bolt failures common on all Hemi variants from thermal cycling. Performance brake service at Brembo calipers (SRT).
Four-door muscle car sharing the Challenger platform. Base 3.6L Pentastar develops oil cooler housing leaks as the #1 issue — plastic housing cracks and leaks coolant externally or into oil. SRT 392 and Hellcat variants: same engine concerns as Challenger plus differential fluid service on the Torque Reserve AWD system. Police Pursuit (5.7L): high-cycle brake wear and transmission fluid degradation from sustained high-speed use.
Three-row SUV on the Grand Cherokee platform. 3.6L Pentastar oil cooler housing leak is the leading issue — same as Charger/Challenger. 5.7L Hemi models: MDS lifter concerns, especially on tow-cycle vehicles where MDS activates and deactivates repeatedly. SRT 392: performance brakes require matched replacement. Transfer case and rear diff fluid service at 30,000 miles — commonly skipped on tow vehicles.
Dart (2013–2016): 1.4L turbocharged MultiAir or 2.0L/2.4L Tigershark. MultiAir 1.4T is sensitive to oil change intervals — extended intervals cause MultiAir actuator failures that present as rough idle and engine management codes. Grand Caravan: 3.6L Pentastar (oil cooler housing) or 3.3/3.8L V6. Journey: same platform concerns. All well-supported through NAPA and Mopar parts channels.
The Multi-Displacement System collapses 4 lifters at highway speeds to save fuel. The MDS lifters are the weak point — they fail to return to the active position and cause a distinctive tick, P0300-series misfire codes, and rough running. The 5.7L Hemi (2009–2021) is most affected. Early diagnosis is critical — failed MDS lifters left unaddressed damage the camshaft, turning a $1,500 lifter job into a $4,000+ repair. We scan live data and confirm misfire pattern before teardown. Engine repair →
The most common Pentastar failure. The plastic oil cooler housing (also called the thermostat housing assembly) cracks at the sealing surface — coolant leaks externally or, in severe cases, enters the oil. Symptoms: sweet coolant smell at operating temperature, slow coolant loss without an obvious drip, or milky oil cap in advanced cases. The full housing assembly is replaced — partial repair is not reliable. Affects Challenger, Charger, Durango, Grand Caravan, and Chrysler vehicles with the 3.6L.
All Hemi V8 variants (5.7L, 6.4L, 6.2L) experience exhaust manifold bolt fractures from thermal cycling — especially in Chico where summer heat creates large temperature swings. The fractured bolt allows the manifold to leak, causing a ticking noise that sounds like a valve train issue but is actually exhaust. We probe the manifold flanges with the engine running to confirm the source before any diagnosis. Common on high-mileage and track-driven examples.
The Hellcat's roots-type supercharger has a separate intercooler reservoir that requires its own coolant level check — separate from the main engine coolant. It's easy to miss during routine service. Low intercooler coolant causes heat soak and significant power reduction under sustained boost. We check both reservoirs at every oil change. The supercharger snout bearing is also a wear item on high-mileage Hellcats.
3.6L Pentastar: 0W-20 full synthetic, 5.5 qts. 5.7L Hemi: 5W-20 full synthetic, 7 qts. 6.4L 392: 5W-20 full synthetic, 7 qts. 6.2L Hellcat: 5W-20 full synthetic, 7 qts. MDS-equipped Hemis benefit from 5,000-mile intervals in Chico's heat. From $89.98. Oil change →
Standard Dodge: from $599.99/axle. SRT / Hellcat / Scat Pack (performance brakes): from $699.99/axle. Pads and rotors together per axle. Brembo-equipped SRT models require OEM-equivalent pads to match the caliper's thermal envelope. Brake repair →
$199.99/hr with written report. MDS lifter pattern diagnosis, oil cooler housing inspection, exhaust manifold probe, Hellcat intercooler check. Written report before any work approved. Diagnostics →
Yes. Challenger, Charger, Durango, Dart, Grand Caravan, and all Dodge passenger cars. Hemi 5.7L, 6.4L 392, 6.2L Hellcat/Redeye, and Pentastar 3.6L. Diagnostics, oil change, brakes, MDS lifter repairs, Pentastar oil cooler, exhaust, and performance service. Written estimate before any work. (530) 826-4275.
The Multi-Displacement System (MDS) deactivates 4 of the 8 cylinders at highway speeds to save fuel. The MDS lifters are hydraulically actuated and collapse — when they fail to return to the active position, you get a tick, misfire codes (P030X), and a distinctive knock. The 5.7L is most affected; 6.4L 392 is less prone. Early diagnosis prevents camshaft damage.
Oil cooler housing leak — the most common 3.6L issue. The plastic housing that integrates the oil cooler and thermostat develops cracks at the sealing surface. Coolant seeps into the oil or externally. You'll often see a sweet coolant smell after warm-up or find a slow coolant loss without an obvious drip. Replacement of the full housing assembly resolves it.
Yes. The 6.2L Hellcat supercharged V8 (707–797 hp) uses a roots-type supercharger driven by the crank. Oil: 5W-20 full synthetic, 7 quarts. Intercooler reservoirs require separate coolant level checks. Brake service is critical on high-output Mopar platforms — Brembo 4-piston calipers require OEM-equivalent pads. We recommend 5,000-mile oil change intervals on Hellcat engines.
5.7L Hemi: 5W-20 full synthetic, 7 quarts. 6.4L 392 Hemi: 5W-20 full synthetic, 7 quarts. 6.2L Hellcat/Redeye: 5W-20 full synthetic, 7 quarts. 3.6L Pentastar: 0W-20 full synthetic, 5.5 quarts. We verify your exact VIN spec. MDS-equipped Hemis (5.7L) benefit from 5,000-mile intervals in Chico's heat to protect MDS lifters.
