Duramax diesel repair Chico CA. Silverado Sierra 2500/3500 LB7 LLY LBZ LMM LML L5P. EGR, DPF, injectors, CP4. Written diagnosis. (530) 826-4275.
Silverado/Sierra 2500/3500 Duramax specialist in Chico. LB7 injector failure, LMM/LML EGR and DPF issues, LML CP4 pump failure, L5P DEF system faults. Diagnosis before any repair recommendation.
Tedious Auto Repair in Chico services all Duramax diesel generations — LB7 (2001–2004), LLY (2004.5–2005), LBZ (2006–2007), LMM (2007.5–2010), LML (2011–2016), L5P (2017–present). Each generation has specific failure patterns we diagnose and repair. Written estimate before any work. By Buddy Rausch, Owner · Reviewed May 20, 2026
The LB7 is notorious for injector failure — the injectors are located inside the valve covers and exposed to engine oil. They leak fuel into the oil (raw fuel dilution), causing low power, blue-white smoke, and rapid oil contamination. Injector replacement on an LB7 requires valve cover removal and is typically done as a set of 8. GM extended the warranty on these injectors; check your VIN for coverage before paying out of pocket.
LMM introduced the DPF — the beginning of emissions system headaches. LML added the DEF/SCR system. Common issues: EGR cooler clogging from soot accumulation, DPF regen failures from Chico farm/ranch short-trip driving, EGR valve sticking, and DEF dosing system faults. We diagnose the specific failed component, not replace the entire emissions system.
The LML Duramax uses a Bosch CP4.1 high-pressure fuel pump — the same family as the catastrophic CP4.2 in the 6.7L Cummins. CP4 failure sends metal debris through the entire fuel system. Prevention: strict fuel filter intervals (every 15,000 miles), no biodiesel above B5, and using a fuel additive with lubricity improver.
L5P is the most emissions-compliant Duramax with a complex DEF/SCR/DPF system. NOx sensor failures, DEF injector faults, and DEF quality codes are the most common issues we see on L5P trucks in Chico. The L5P itself is mechanically robust — most L5P problems trace to the emissions system, not the engine.
LB7/LLY/LBZ: 15W-40 CK-4. LMM/LML: dexos1 or 15W-40 CK-4 per GM spec. L5P: dexos1 Gen 3 required — not interchangeable with older dexos1. From $169.99. Fuel filter every 15,000 miles. DEF top-off as needed.
All Duramax generations use glow plugs — 8 plugs, one per cylinder. Hard cold starts on Chico's winter mornings, white smoke at startup, and rough cold idle indicate glow plug failure. Tested with a current clamp draw test — we confirm failure before removing any plug.
All generations: LB7 (2001–2004), LLY (2004.5–2005), LBZ (2006–2007), LMM (2007.5–2010), LML (2011–2016), and L5P (2017–present) in Silverado/Sierra 2500/3500 and Chevy/GMC vans.
LB7 injectors are located inside the valve covers and can leak fuel into the engine oil when they fail. Symptoms: raw fuel smell in oil, blue-white smoke, rapid oil consumption, loss of power. Injector replacement done as a set of 8 — inside-valve-cover location makes it a significant labor job.
Older Duramax (LB7–LBZ): 15W-40 CK-4. LMM/LML: dexos1 or 15W-40 CK-4 per spec. L5P: dexos1 Gen 3 — specifically required. Never use a non-dexos oil in an L5P without confirming compatibility. From $169.99 at Tedious Auto Repair.
Yes. DPF regen failures, EGR cooler clogging, DEF quality faults, NOx sensor failures — all diagnosed with OEM-level scan tools. We identify the specific failed component. Many DPF codes on Duramax trucks are actually EGR or sensor issues — we confirm before recommending DPF service.
The LML Duramax uses a Bosch CP4.1 that can catastrophically fail and contaminate the entire high-pressure fuel system with metal debris. Prevention: strict fuel filter intervals (every 15,000 miles), no B20+ biodiesel, and a lubricity additive. If the CP4 has already failed, the injectors, rails, and lines all require replacement.
