The 5.3L Active Fuel Management (AFM, GM's version of Hemi MDS) collapses 4 lifters at cruise — the same failure mode as the Dodge Hemi. Sierra 1500 trucks (2007–2021) with the 5.3L are the most common AFM lifter job we do in Chico. AFM lifters fail and cause a tick, P0300 misfires, and oil consumption. Early diagnosis before camshaft damage saves thousands.
Yukon and Suburban 4WD models need transfer case fluid service every 45,000 miles and front/rear differential fluid every 30,000 miles — commonly skipped. Towing to Lake Oroville and off-road use on Butte County roads shortens these intervals. We inspect all fluid conditions at every oil change.
The Canyon 2.8L Duramax inline-4 diesel is an excellent engine — but DPF regeneration requires sustained highway driving. Short-trip Chico driving prevents complete regen and causes DPF loading. We monitor DPF soot load at every service. EGR cooler inspection at 80,000 miles.
