Turn the engine off. Let it sit for 2 minutes. Set a multimeter to DC voltage (20V range). Touch red lead to positive terminal (+), black lead to negative terminal (−). Read the voltage on the display. Engine off, this is called the 'resting voltage' or 'open circuit voltage.'
