Toe is the inward or outward angle of the tires when viewed from above. Toe-in means the fronts of the tires point toward each other. Toe-out means the fronts point away from each other.
Most vehicles run a small amount of toe-in at the front for straight-line stability. Rear toe varies by vehicle design.
Incorrect toe is the fastest way to destroy tires. Even 1/8 inch of toe error causes rapid inside or outside edge wear.
More importantly, incorrect toe affects vehicle tracking. Toe out causes instability at speed. Toe in causes the vehicle to fight itself. Both are safety concerns.
Camber (inward/outward tilt of the tire when viewed from the front) and caster (forward/backward tilt of the steering axis) also affect handling and tire wear.
But toe is the most immediately damaging when incorrect, and the most commonly out-of-spec angle on worn or damaged suspension.
Front toe is adjusted by turning the tie rod shaft between the inner and outer tie rod ends. Lengthening the tie rod on one side decreases toe-in (or increases toe-out). Shortening it does the opposite.
Both sides are adjusted to maintain proper toe split (equal contribution from each side). The steering wheel is centered during the process.
If tie rod ends are worn (loose or with excessive play), alignment is temporary. The worn components must be replaced first, then alignment performed.
We inspect tie rod ends at every alignment visit. Aligning a vehicle with worn tie rods wastes the alignment fee.
Most modern vehicles with independent rear suspension adjust rear toe via cam bolts on the rear control arms. Rotating the cam bolt moves the wheel fore or aft, changing toe angle.

Some older vehicles and some current vehicles with solid rear axles have fixed rear toe with no adjustment. If rear toe is out of spec on these, worn or bent suspension components are the cause.
Bent rear axle housings, damaged trailing arms, or worn bushings require component replacement, not alignment adjustment.
Vehicles with insufficient factory rear toe adjustment range can be fitted with adjustable rear toe links, cam bolt kits, or eccentric bushings to extend adjustment range.
This is common on lowered vehicles and vehicles used for track events. Part cost $150-$400 plus installation labor.
