If combustion gases are present in the coolant, the analyzer changes color — combustion gases should never be in the cooling system. This test identifies a breached head gasket before the engine overheats, before coolant is visible in the oil, and before any symptoms appear. The HC test identifies whether combustion gases are entering the cooling system. It does not identify: which head gasket is breached (left or right), whether the breach is between a combustion chamber and the coolant jacket vs the oil jacket, or the severity of the breach. These details emerge from compression testing and physical inspection after the engine is disassembled. The HC test is the correct first step — it confirms or rules out head gasket involvement before any teardown.
After a positive HC test: four-cylinder compression test. Low compression on one or two cylinders confirms which area of the gasket is breached and indicates whether valve damage has occurred from the breach. An EJ25 with cylinders reading below 120 PSI (normal is 170 to 190 PSI) has either ring or valve damage in addition to the gasket failure. This changes the repair scope and cost.

The most commonly missed early EJ25 head gasket symptom: coolant reservoir level dropping 0.5 to 1 inch between monthly checks with no visible puddle under the car. Most owners notice this, check for puddles (find none), and conclude the coolant level drop is "normal evaporation." Coolant does not evaporate significantly in a sealed system with a functioning pressure cap. Any coolant loss without a visible puddle: HC combustion test before any other diagnosis. Opening the hood of an EJ25 with a breached head gasket often produces a sweet glycol smell from the coolant reservoir area — combustion heat reaching the coolant, vaporizing small amounts of coolant near the breach. White smoke from the exhaust, especially on cold start that persists as the engine warms: coolant entering the combustion chamber and being burned. By the time white exhaust smoke is visible, the head gasket breach has reached a stage where coolant loss per mile is significant. This stage is further along than the slow coolant loss stage — the HC test is still the correct next step, but the urgency is higher. Do not continue highway driving on a CA-32 grade in a Subaru with white exhaust smoke.
The HC combustion gas test is sensitive to very small quantities of combustion gas in the cooling system — quantities that produce no visible symptom whatsoever. A Subaru that has had three consecutive negative HC tests (at 90k, 105k, and 120k miles) and then tests positive at 135k: the breach developed between 120k and 135k miles. Regular testing at major service intervals catches the breach at the early stage when repair is straightforward.
(1) Check coolant reservoir level monthly — photograph the level with the date. Any drop between photos: call us. (2) Check the oil dipstick — if oil has a milky or frothy appearance: this is oil and coolant mixing, an advanced breach. (3) Smell the coolant reservoir — sweet glycol smell during or after a drive: possible breach. (4) Look at the exhaust on a cold start for white smoke that persists past 30 seconds of running. The event was not random: it was caused by a breach that had been developing silently for months.

This cycle is harder on the head gasket sealing surfaces than flat highway driving.
