Some Lexus 4-cylinder models develop timing chain rattle on cold startup, indicating chain stretch or tensioner wear. A rattling timing chain is a warning sign that should not be ignored.

RX AWD and GX models can develop rear differential shudder during tight turns, indicating degraded differential fluid. This is a normal fluid service item, not a component failure in most cases.
Rear differential fluid change every 30,000 miles prevents shudder. If shudder has developed, fluid change often resolves it. Gear damage from extended neglect requires differential rebuild.
Lexus hybrid models (RX 400h, RX 450h, ES 300h, CT 200h) use a continuously variable transmission with hydraulic fluid that requires periodic service.
High-voltage battery health should be monitored on hybrid models over 100,000 miles. Cell degradation reduces fuel economy and can eventually affect driveability.
Some RX 400h and RX 450h models have documented brake actuator issues causing a grinding or pulsating sensation during braking. This is a known failure pattern.
Brake actuator replacement is the repair. Symptom: grinding or pulsation during light brake application, especially noticeable during regenerative braking engagement.
Newer Lexus engines with direct injection (IS 200t, RC 200t, NX 200t) are susceptible to intake valve carbon buildup. Fuel injectors spray directly into the cylinder, bypassing the intake valves.
Without fuel washing the intake valves, carbon deposits accumulate over 40,000-80,000 miles. Walnut blast cleaning removes the deposits and restores performance.
IS 250 2GR-FE: strong engine, monitor oil consumption after 80,000 miles. IS 350: very reliable, oil changes at 5,000 miles important.
IS 200t (2016+): GDI engine, walnut blast cleaning at 60,000+ miles. Timing chain inspection at 100,000 miles.
ES 350 2GR-FE: same oil consumption awareness as IS 250. ES 300h hybrid: excellent reliability, CVT fluid service at 60,000 miles.
