All SkyActiv-G engines (2012+) are direct injection — no fuel wash on the intake valves. Carbon deposits accumulate over time and cause rough idle, hesitation, and loss of power. Intake valve cleaning recommended at 60,000 miles. 5,000-mile full synthetic oil intervals slow carbon accumulation rate. Mazda's SkyActiv engines are otherwise extremely reliable.
The CX-9's 2.5L turbocharged SkyActiv-T engine is sensitive to oil quality. The factory 7,500-mile interval assumes cooler climates — in Chico's heat we recommend 5,000 miles maximum. Turbo bearing lubrication depends on clean oil; extended intervals cause turbo oil coking and eventual bearing failure.
High-revving MX-5 use (track days, canyon driving on CA-32) accelerates camshaft wear when oil is degraded. The 1.5L and 2.0L SkyActiv engines are very durable at stock use but respond badly to old oil at high RPM. 4,000-mile intervals for track-driven Miatas. We hear this concern frequently from Chico drivers who use CA-32 as a backroad.
CX-5 undercarriage heat shields and exhaust components develop surface rust faster than average in Chico's climate — the dry heat + occasional rain causes oxidation on untreated steel. We inspect heat shields during every oil change; a loose or rusted shield creates a rattling noise that gets misdiagnosed as a drivetrain issue.
