2.1L OM651 diesel: timing chain (rear of engine), EGR system, DPF cleaning, glow plug replacement. 3.0L OM642 V6 diesel: balance shaft timing chain failure at 100,000–150,000 miles — expensive repair if not caught early. Fluid service every 10,000 miles (MB 229.51 spec).
The V6 M272 and V8 M273 in 2006–2013 E-Class, C-Class, and ML-Class have documented balance shaft gear wear and timing chain guide failures. A worn balance shaft gear creates a distinct rattle and eventual complete failure. Caught early: gear + guides replacement. Caught late: significant engine damage. P0016/P0017 codes, rough running, and visible gear wear on inspection.

The OM642 in 2006–2016 Sprinter and ML350 diesel has a balance shaft timing chain that fails at 100,000–150,000 miles. Similar to M272 — catches early saves the engine. This is a full engine-out repair on Sprinter vans. Symptoms: diesel rattle, oil leaks from front seals.

All current Mercedes turbocharged engines (M274 4-cyl, M276 V6, M177/M178 AMG V8) use direct injection and accumulate carbon at 60,000–80,000 miles. Walnut-shell media blasting removes deposits completely.
