What Is Mercedes Service B?

Mercedes Service B is the larger of the two scheduled services. It includes everything in Service A plus brake fluid replacement, cabin air filter (dust filter), comprehensive systems inspection, and additional fluid checks specific to your model. Service B alternates with Service A — if your Mercedes had Service A at 10,000 miles, Service B is due at 30,000, then back to A at 50,000, and so on.

The Mercedes-Benz dealer typically charges $749-$1,049 for Service B. Tedious Auto Repair performs the same service for $549-$799 using MB-approved fluids, OEM-equivalent or genuine filters, and Mercedes-published inspection procedures. For Mercedes Service A, see our Service A page. For broader Mercedes care, see Mercedes repair.

Why Service B Brake Fluid Replacement Is Critical

Mercedes ABS Systems Are Particularly Sensitive

Mercedes uses some of the most sophisticated braking systems on the market — SBC (Sensotronic Brake Control), regenerative braking on hybrids, advanced ABS pumps with internal valves. All of these systems are sensitive to brake fluid water content. Mercedes specifically calls out brake fluid replacement at every B service interval because ABS pumps have failed at 80,000-120,000 miles when fluid wasn't changed.

The DOT 4 Spec Matters

Mercedes specifies DOT 4 brake fluid (DOT 4 Plus on some models). DOT 4 has higher boiling points than DOT 3 and is what Mercedes engineered the system for. We use only Mercedes-approved DOT 4 brake fluid — never substitute DOT 3 to save money.

Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Mercedes cabin air filters are often more sophisticated than Honda or Toyota equivalents — many include activated charcoal layers for odor filtration. Replacing them at every B service ensures the climate control system performs as designed and prevents the musty smell that affected vehicles develop when the filter clogs.

Service B Catches Mercedes-Specific Issues

The comprehensive inspection at Service B is specifically valuable for Mercedes vehicles because of common platform issues: air suspension wear (S-Class, GL-Class), control arm bushing failure (C-Class W204), rear differential leaks (E-Class, S-Class). The inspection catches these issues before they become expensive failures.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Service B different from Service A?

Service B includes everything in Service A plus brake fluid replacement, cabin air filter, and additional comprehensive inspection. Service B is roughly 1.5-2x the time and cost of Service A.

How often does Service B come around?

Service B alternates with Service A on a 20,000-mile cycle. So if you had Service A at 10,000 miles, Service B is at 30,000 miles, then Service A at 50,000 miles, etc.

Why is brake fluid replacement so important on Mercedes?

Mercedes braking systems (SBC, regenerative on hybrids, advanced ABS pumps) are particularly sensitive to brake fluid water content. ABS pump failures at 80,000-120,000 miles in Mercedes vehicles correlate strongly with skipped brake fluid services. Replacing fluid every Service B is critical insurance.

Do you use Mercedes-spec brake fluid?

Yes — we use Mercedes-approved DOT 4 brake fluid. Some models specify DOT 4 Plus (lower viscosity for ABS pump speed). We verify the correct spec for your VIN.

Will the cabin filter on my Mercedes have charcoal?

Most modern Mercedes vehicles use charcoal-activated cabin filters for odor filtration. We use the same charcoal-equivalent filters as OEM. If you have a non-charcoal version, we can match it.

How long does Service B take?

Typically 2-3 hours. We offer drop-off, shuttle service, and loaners for longer services. Most customers prefer drop-off and pickup later in the day.
