MINI Cooper uses BMW's Condition Based Service (CBS) system — understandable, since BMW has owned MINI since 2000 and engineering is shared. Oil service, Inspection I, and Inspection II are scheduled by CBS based on actual driving conditions. MINIs use BMW LL-01 spec oils and most BMW service procedures apply. Tedious Auto Repair services every MINI with BMW-grade tools.
MINI oil service is typically every 7,500-15,000 miles based on CBS. Modern MINI engines use BMW Long-Life-01 (LL-01) or LL-04 specification oils — same as BMW. Common viscosity is 5W-30 full synthetic.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Engine oil & filter | BMW LL-01 (5W-30) typical — verify by VIN |
| Oil drain plug crush washer | Replaced (BMW spec requirement) |
| CBS oil counter reset | Reset to next interval via diagnostic tool |
| Multi-point inspection | Brake remaining life, tire condition, fluids |
Total MINI oil service: $129-$199 depending on engine. JCW (John Cooper Works) models use slightly different oil and run higher.
Inspection I includes oil service plus brake fluid flush, microfilter (cabin filter), and comprehensive systems inspection. Typically due every 30,000-60,000 miles on CBS.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Engine oil & filter | BMW LL-01 spec |
| Brake fluid flush | BMW-spec DOT 4 |
| Microfilter (cabin filter) | OEM or charcoal-equivalent |
| Front brake pads inspection | Caliper measurement |
| Rear brake pads inspection | Caliper measurement |
| Battery test (CBS) | Conductance test, registered if replaced |
| Multi-point digital inspection | Bushings, control arms, hoses, electrical |
| CBS counter reset | All applicable items |
Total MINI Inspection I: $349-$549.
Inspection II is the comprehensive service. Includes everything in Inspection I plus spark plugs, engine air filter, transmission fluid (Aisin 8AT), coolant check, and additional inspection scope.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Engine oil & filter | BMW spec synthetic |
| Brake fluid flush | BMW DOT 4 |
| Microfilter (cabin filter) | OEM-equivalent |
| Engine air filter | OEM-equivalent |
| Spark plugs | BMW iridium — typically 60-100k interval |
| Transmission fluid (Aisin 8AT) | BMW/Aisin-spec ATF (every 60-80k recommended) |
| Coolant level & freeze test | BMW-spec coolant verification |
| Brake pads/rotors inspection | Caliper measurement, photo |
| Suspension & steering check | Comprehensive (especially control arm bushings) |
| Battery test & replacement (if needed) | Registered to vehicle if replaced |
| CBS counter reset | All applicable items |
Total MINI Inspection II: $599-$1,099 depending on what's due.
The R56 MINI Cooper (2007-2013) used Prince engines (N12 base, N14 turbo, N18 later turbo) with severe direct-injection carbon buildup at 50,000-80,000 miles. Symptoms: rough idle, misfire codes, reduced power. Walnut blast intake cleaning is the proven fix — we perform this service in-house.
The N14 turbocharged engine had timing chain stretch issues, particularly on early production. Symptoms: rattling on cold start that fades after 10-30 seconds. If left unaddressed, the chain can jump time and cause catastrophic engine damage. We inspect timing chain condition on every R56 N14 service.
2014+ MINIs use BMW's B38 (1.5L 3-cyl) or B48 (2.0L 4-cyl) turbo engines. These are far more reliable than the older Prince engines. Same maintenance principles apply but fewer issues. JCW models use the B48 in higher-output tune.
Like BMW, MINI Cooper requires battery registration when a new battery is installed. The Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) needs to know about the new battery to charge correctly. Without registration, the new battery fails in 6-12 months. We always register MINI batteries with our BMW-capable diagnostic tools.
The Aisin 8AT used in 2014+ MINIs (and shared with BMW) is durable but benefits from fluid service every 60,000-80,000 miles — despite "lifetime fluid" marketing. Transmission failures we see in 100,000+ mile MINIs almost always correlate with skipped fluid services.

Mostly yes. Modern MINIs (2014+) use BMW B38 or B48 engines, BMW transmissions, and BMW electronics. Service procedures are nearly identical. The exceptions are pre-2014 MINIs with Prince engines (different from BMW).
Typically 30-50%. MINI Inspection I at the dealer is $549-$799. Our equivalent service is $349-$549. The biggest savings are on transmission and brake service.
Almost certainly if you have over 60,000 miles. R56 MINIs (2007-2013) with Prince engines (N12, N14, N18) develop heavy intake valve carbon. Walnut blast cleaning restores like-new running and is significantly cheaper than the resulting misfires would be.
MINIs (like BMW) use intelligent battery sensors that track battery health and charging. When a new battery is installed, the system needs to be told about it via diagnostic tool. Without registration, the new battery fails in 6-12 months from improper charging.
Despite "lifetime fluid" marketing, the Aisin 8-speed automatic in 2014+ MINIs benefits from fluid service every 60,000-80,000 miles. We follow Aisin's actual published service interval, not MINI's marketing position.
Yes — JCWs use the same B48 engine in higher tune. Same maintenance principles, slightly different oil (still BMW spec but verified by VIN). Track-driven JCWs benefit from shortened intervals.
