The Outlander JATCO CVT requires fluid service every 30,000 miles in severe service — and Chico's heat qualifies. The "lifetime" designation on earlier models referred to 100,000-mile warranty intervals, not the actual transmission life. CVT failures on neglected Outlanders at 130,000–160,000 miles are preventable with fluid changes.
Lancer 2.0L SOHC engines (non-Evolution) use a timing belt at 60,000–90,000 miles depending on year. This is an interference engine — belt failure causes immediate catastrophic valve damage. Water pump should be replaced at the same time. Check your service records; many Lancers arrive with an overdue belt.
The 3.0L and 3.8L V6 engines in Eclipse and Galant are interference engines with timing belts at 60,000 miles. These are older platforms with strong parts availability. We see timing belt failures on neglected examples — the visual inspection alone is not reliable; replace on schedule regardless of appearance.
The All-Wheel Control rear coupling on the Outlander Sport requires fluid service every 30,000 miles. Skipped service causes premature coupling failure — symptoms include vibration during cornering and AWC warning lights. Coupling replacement is expensive; the fluid service is not.
