Pre-Road-Trip Inspection Chico CA

A road trip to LA, Reno, Portland, or beyond turns a small problem into a $1,500 emergency repair somewhere you don't know any mechanics. Our pre-trip inspection is $99, takes 90 minutes, and catches the brake, tire, fluid, battery, and AC issues that fail on long-distance highway driving.

Why a Pre-Trip Inspection Is Worth $99

The math on pre-trip inspections is simple: $99 here vs. $1,500 stranded somewhere unfamiliar. The most common roadside failures — flat tire from worn rubber, dead battery, blown radiator hose, AC failure in 110° desert — are all things we can catch in 90 minutes before you leave.

If something marginal is found, we tell you the urgency: this needs fixing before you go, this can wait until you get back, this just needs monitoring. Most pre-trip inspections come out clean or with one minor issue. The ones that don't usually save the customer thousands by catching something before it strands them in Death Valley.

Common Trip-Stranding Failures We Catch

Old Tires (Even With Plenty of Tread)

Tire rubber degrades over time even sitting in your driveway. After 6 years from manufacture date, the rubber compound starts to harden and crack regardless of mileage. We see plenty of low-mileage tires with 8/32" tread that are dangerous because they're 8 years old. Date code is a 4-digit number on the sidewall: 2521 means 25th week of 2021. Tires older than 6 years should be inspected closely; older than 10 years should be replaced.

Marginal Battery

A battery that starts your car fine in town can struggle to start it in 95°F desert heat after a full day of AC use. Our load test simulates the full demand and tells us how many usable cold-cranking-amps remain. If you're at 70% or below before a major trip, replacement is cheap insurance.

Coolant System Pressure Test

A weak hose, a hairline-cracked plastic radiator tank, or an aging water pump seal can hold pressure in normal driving but blow on a 100-mile climb up the Grapevine. We pressurize the cooling system to 15-18 psi and watch for any drop — even a slow drop indicates a marginal component that's likely to fail under stress.

Brake Pad Wear

Brakes that have 30% pad left in town can deplete fast on long mountain descents. Highway 5 Grapevine, I-80 Donner, US-101 over various coastal mountains — all chew through marginal brakes. We measure pad thickness with calipers and tell you whether you'll make the trip safely.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I do a pre-trip inspection?

Ideally 1-2 weeks before the trip. That gives time to address any findings without rushing. If something significant is found, you'll have time to schedule the repair, get parts, and confirm everything is good before leaving.

What does the $99 inspection actually include?

Tires (all four plus spare), brakes, all fluids (level and condition), battery and alternator, cooling system pressure test, AC performance, all visible belts and hoses, lights, wipers, suspension, exhaust, and a digital photo report of every item.

Will you find things I don't actually need to fix?

We tell you the urgency for every finding: this needs fixing before you leave, this can wait until you're back, this is just FYI for monitoring. We don't pressure-sell repairs.

Can you do the inspection same-day?

Usually yes, especially Tuesday-Thursday. Friday and Monday tend to be busy — book a few days ahead for those. Call (530) 826-4275 to confirm availability.

Does the $99 cover repairs I need?

No — the $99 is the inspection only. Any repairs are quoted separately, and we typically prioritize same-day or next-day completion if you're leaving soon.

What if something fails on the trip despite the inspection?

Our warranty covers any work we performed if something we replaced fails. For things we didn't touch (component failures unrelated to inspected items), the inspection report at least documents that the system was functional when you left.
