The Short Answer

A bad head gasket shows itself through white exhaust smoke, coolant loss with no visible external leak, overheating, and milky or frothy oil. The HC combustion gas test ($199.99 flat) confirms whether combustion gases are in the coolant — non-invasively, before any teardown. Subaru EJ25 external failures are HC-negative and less expensive to repair. We never recommend head gasket repair without the HC test confirming it. By Buddy Rausch, Owner · Reviewed May 20, 2026

How We Diagnose Head Gaskets — Chico, CA

🧪 New Method — HC Combustion Gas Test ($199.99)

The current-generation test uses a chemical block tester placed over the coolant reservoir filler neck. If combustion gases are present in the coolant — indicating a breach between the combustion chamber and the coolant jacket — the test fluid changes color. This is non-invasive, performed cold, and takes about 15 minutes. A positive result confirms internal head gasket failure before any engine disassembly.

The new-method fluid is more sensitive and less prone to false positives from exhaust fumes than the older blue-fluid block testers. We use the current-generation chemical specifically formulated for the HC test. See the "New Method" video above for exactly how we perform it.

⏳ Old Method — Blue Block Tester

The original block tester (shown in the "Old Method" video above) uses a blue chemical fluid that turns yellow in the presence of combustion gases. It works the same way — combustion gases drawn through the fluid cause a color change. The old method is susceptible to false positives if exhaust fumes contaminate the sample. The new method addresses this limitation. We use the newer formulation for all current testing.

⚠️ When It's Bad — What You're Seeing

The "When It's Bad" videos above show what an active internal head gasket failure looks like: bubbling and foaming in the coolant reservoir from combustion pressure entering the cooling system, continuous white smoke under load that doesn't clear, and coolant level dropping visibly between checks. If your coolant reservoir looks like it's boiling while the engine is running, this is a head gasket emergency — stop driving.

💧 Coolant Pressure Test — $179.99

Before the HC test, we perform a coolant pressure test to rule out external leaks. We pressurize the cooling system to the radiator cap rating and inspect every component — water pump weep hole, thermostat housing, hose fittings, and radiator end tanks. External leaks found here are often less expensive to repair than a head gasket. If the pressure holds and coolant is still disappearing, the HC test follows.

💨 White Smoke From Exhaust

White or grey smoke that does NOT clear as the engine warms up. Normal condensation produces a small puff of white vapor on cold startup that disappears within a minute. Head gasket white smoke is continuous, sometimes heavy, and often has a sweet smell. It gets worse under load. The "When It's Bad" videos above show exactly what this looks like.

💧 Coolant Loss With No Visible Leak

The coolant level drops between checks but there are no puddles, no external stains, no visible drips. The coolant is entering the combustion chamber and exiting as steam through the exhaust, or entering the oil. This is the most insidious symptom — many drivers add coolant repeatedly without realizing the cause. In Chico's heat, the coolant evaporates quickly, making external leaks harder to spot.

🌡️ Overheating

The engine overheats even after the cooling system has been serviced. A failed head gasket allows combustion pressure to enter the cooling system — the pressure exceeds the radiator cap rating, the coolant boils, and the engine overheats. A head gasket failure can both cause and be caused by overheating — once the engine overheats severely, the head gasket is often the next failure.

🫙 Mayonnaise Oil / Frothy Coolant

Coolant mixing with oil produces a tan, mayonnaise-like emulsion visible on the oil cap or dipstick. Oil mixing into coolant produces froth in the coolant reservoir. Either indicates coolant and oil passages are communicating — head gasket failure or, rarely, a cracked head. This is the most severe presentation — engine oil with coolant mixed in provides almost no lubrication and bearing failure follows quickly.

🫧 Bubbling Coolant Reservoir

Combustion gases entering the cooling system pressurize the coolant and cause visible bubbling in the reservoir even when the engine is not overheated. If your reservoir is bubbling at operating temperature, the HC test will almost certainly be positive. This is one of the clearest indicators of an internal breach.

🔋 Rapid Battery/Electrical Drain

Less obvious: coolant entering the combustion chamber can cause misfires (P0300-series codes), which stress the ignition coils and can cause incomplete combustion sensor faults. A head gasket failure can present initially as a misfire diagnosis — the HC test is warranted any time coolant loss accompanies engine performance issues.

Head Gasket by Vehicle — Most Common in Chico

🚗 Subaru EJ25 — External Failure (Most Common)

The 1996–2011 Subaru EJ25 (Outback, Forester, Legacy, Impreza) is the most common head gasket repair we perform in Chico. Chico's CSU student population means a high concentration of used Subarus. The EJ25 external failure is a coolant seep from the exhaust port side of the head gasket — coolant weeps externally rather than entering the combustion chamber. The HC test is typically negative on EJ25 external failures — good news, because it means less extensive repair.

From $1,499.99 per side. Most EJ25 Outbacks and Foresters need one side (usually the rear). We pressure test and HC test after reassembly. Subaru overheating guide →

🚗 Toyota Tacoma 2TR-FE — Overheating-Induced

The 2.7L Tacoma 2TR-FE doesn't have a factory head gasket weakness — but it has a water pump and timing cover gasket that fail at 80,000–120,000 miles. When these are missed and the engine overheats severely, the head gasket fails as a result of the overheating event. We always start with a water pump and pressure test before condemning the head gasket on a 2TR. Toyota overheating guide →

🚗 Honda J35 V6 — Overheating-Induced

The J35 V6 in Pilot, Odyssey, and Ridgeline uses a belt-driven water pump that fails internally with no warning. The first symptom is overheating. If the driver continues driving through the overheat event, the head gasket fails. We always start with the timing belt and water pump diagnosis on J35 overheating before the head gasket. 🚙 Any High-Mileage Engine

Any engine that has experienced severe overheating, run low on coolant repeatedly, or has deferred cooling system maintenance is at elevated head gasket risk. The HC test is part of every pre-purchase inspection we perform — Chico's used car market has plenty of vehicles with undisclosed overheating histories. Pre-purchase inspection →

Stop Driving vs Drive to Us — Head Gasket Triage

🛑 STOP DRIVING Immediately If:

Engine temperature gauge is in the red or near red. Steam coming from under the hood. Coolant reservoir bubbling visibly. Sudden loss of power combined with white smoke. Mayonnaise-like substance on the oil cap. Any of these indicate active engine damage in progress — continued driving risks hydrolocking (coolant entering a cylinder and bending a connecting rod) or warped cylinder head.

✅ Drive to Us (Carefully) If:

You have white smoke only on cold startup that clears quickly. Coolant is slightly low but the temp gauge is normal. You have a sweet exhaust smell but no overheating. Check the coolant level first — if it's above minimum, you can typically drive to us at normal temperature. Call ahead at (530) 826-4275 and we'll advise based on your specific symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions — Chico, CA

What are the signs of a bad head gasket?

White or grey smoke from the exhaust that doesn't clear as the engine warms. Sweet smell from the exhaust. Coolant loss with no visible external leak. Overheating. Bubbling or frothy coolant in the reservoir. Mayonnaise-like oil on the dipstick or oil cap (coolant mixing with oil). Milky coolant in the overflow tank.

How do you test for a blown head gasket in Chico?

HC combustion gas test — $199.99 flat fee. A chemical test strip is placed over the coolant reservoir. If combustion gases are present in the coolant, the strip changes color. This confirms head gasket failure non-invasively before any teardown. Coolant pressure test $179.99 finds external leaks first.

How much does head gasket repair cost in Chico?

Quoted after diagnosis confirms the failure. Subaru EJ25 external head gasket from $3,370.57 per side. Other vehicles quoted individually after diagnosis. Never quoted without the HC test confirming combustion breach. Written estimate before any work.

Is it safe to drive with a blown head gasket?

No. A confirmed head gasket breach allows coolant into combustion chambers and exhaust. Continued driving causes engine overheating, coolant depletion, and potential hydrolocking (coolant entering a cylinder and bending a connecting rod). Drive to us only if the engine is not overheating. If it's overheating — stop immediately and call us.

What is the difference between external and internal head gasket failure?

External failure (like most Subaru EJ25 cases): the gasket seals the external coolant passage — coolant weeps out externally, visible as a stain or drip near the head/block junction. HC test is typically negative. Internal failure: combustion gases enter the coolant circuit (positive HC test) or coolant enters the combustion chamber (white smoke, rapid coolant loss). Internal failure is more urgent.

Do you specialize in Subaru EJ25 head gaskets in Chico?

Yes. The EJ25 external head gasket failure is the most common head gasket repair we perform. Chico's CSU students with Outbacks and Forresters, valley commuters with Legacys — we see these weekly. EJ25 external failure is typically HC-test negative (good news — less extensive). From $1,499.99 per side with full reassembly and pressure test.
