P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction) on a Subaru often triggers along with a Subaru-specific CVT fault code. Generic scanners won't read the secondary code — you need a professional scan tool with Subaru coverage to get the actual CVT fault.
If the CVT slips on uphill grades — engine revs up but the car doesn't accelerate proportionally — the belt or pulley is losing the ability to grip under load. This is late-stage CVT degradation. Immediate service needed.
