EJ25 ring wear · valve stem seals · diagnosis · real fix vs band-aids
Subaru EJ25 and FB20/FB25 engines are known for higher-than-average oil consumption, especially after 80,000–100,000 miles. If you're adding oil between changes, check consumption rate first: more than 1 quart per 1,000 miles warrants a diagnosis. Many cases are valve stem seals — a repair far less expensive than a full rebuild.
The EJ25's horizontally opposed layout means oil can pool in the lower cylinder. Over time, ring seal degrades and oil passes the rings into the combustion chamber, where it burns. Blue-grey smoke on acceleration is the classic symptom. More common after 120,000 miles.
Valve stem seals harden and crack with age and heat. When seals fail, oil is drawn past the valves into the combustion chamber during the intake stroke. Blue smoke on startup (after sitting overnight) that clears after a minute is the textbook symptom of valve seal failure.
A stuck or failed PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve creates crankcase pressure that pushes oil past seals and into the intake. Often diagnosed as oil consumption but actually an induction leak. We test PCV before recommending any internal work.
Subaru issued a Customer Satisfaction Program (bulletin WRE-98) for 2011–2015 models with FB20 and FB25 engines — covering oil consumption beyond 1 qt/1,200 miles. Check your VIN — some vehicles may still qualify for remediation through Subaru of America.

The EJ25 horizontally-opposed engine (1999–2012 Outback, Forester, Legacy) consumes more oil than the replacement FB-series engines. Consumption of 1 quart per 2,000 miles is common on high-mileage EJ25 engines. This is partly by design (the horizontally-opposed architecture allows more oil contact with combustion surfaces) and partly from ring and valve seal wear at high mileage.
The FB25 (2012+ Outback, Forester, Legacy, Impreza) has substantially lower oil consumption than the EJ25. Consumption above 1 quart per 3,000 miles on an FB25 indicates a specific failure rather than normal architecture behavior. Check the FB25 for: PCV valve failure (allows oil vapor into the intake), valve seal wear (blue smoke at startup), or ring wear (blue smoke under acceleration).
The FA20DIT turbo in the WRX can develop oil consumption from the PCV system becoming overwhelmed under sustained boost conditions. Oil vapor enters the intake and is burned. Blue tinge to exhaust under hard acceleration is the symptom. Check the catch can (if fitted) and PCV valve at every major service.
On EJ25 engines: oil consumption often accompanies head gasket seeping — the seeping gasket allows combustion gases to enter the coolant AND allows oil to migrate past the head gasket. If your EJ25 is consuming oil AND losing coolant with no external leak: run both an HC combustion test and a compression test.
For EJ25 engines with 180,000+ miles consuming 1 quart per 2,500 miles: monthly dipstick check and 5,000-mile oil changes with correct oil is often the correct choice rather than a $2,500 ring job on an aging engine. We help you evaluate repair vs management vs replacement honestly.

Subaru considers 1 quart per 1,200 miles acceptable on FA-series engines (FA20, FA25, some FB25 builds). This is significantly higher than most mainstream manufacturer specs. Most drivers expect zero oil consumption between changes — the Subaru spec is not zero. On a 5,000-mile oil change interval, 1 quart per 1,200 miles means approximately 4 quarts consumed before the change — effectively using the oil faster than many shorter-interval vehicles. This is a known characteristic, not a defect, on FA-series engines within this range.
Oil volatility increases with temperature. A Subaru driven in Chico summer heat (104°F ambient, higher underhood) burns off light hydrocarbon fractions faster than a Subaru in coastal California. A FB25 that consumes zero oil between changes in San Jose may consume 0.5 to 1 quart per 5,000 miles in Chico. This is not a ring failure — it is normal heat-accelerated volatilization. Monthly dipstick checks in Chico summer are standard practice for any Subaru owner.
The EJ25 oil consumption pattern (pre-2012) is ring and valve seal wear rather than volatilization. An EJ25 at 150,000 miles consuming 1 quart per 1,500 miles has a different cause than an FA20 consuming at the same rate. The EJ25 consumption tends to increase progressively with mileage, produces visible blue smoke on cold starts, and is accompanied by oily spark plugs on affected cylinders. The FA20 consumption does not produce blue smoke and is invisible at the tailpipe.
Any Subaru consuming more than 1 quart per 1,000 miles: diagnosis warranted regardless of age. Sudden increase in consumption (was 1 quart per 3,000 miles, now 1 quart per 1,000 miles): diagnosis immediately. Blue smoke on cold start combined with consumption: cylinder leak-down test to assess ring and valve condition. Consumption combined with P0011/P0012 (cam timing codes): oil viscosity issue or VVT actuator wear.
Monthly: pull the dipstick, wipe, reinsert fully, pull again. Read the level. Photo it. Log the date and level. If the level drops more than one mark (approximately 0.5 quart) between monthly checks: bring it in. The documentation you create with this monthly check is the evidence needed to assess whether consumption is stable, worsening, or within normal range.
We perform the Subaru-protocol oil consumption measurement: fresh oil fill to exact level, documentation, and a defined mileage interval (Subaru uses 1,200 miles). At the end of the interval: verify exact level and calculate consumption rate. This protocol generates documented evidence for any warranty or extended warranty claim.
Some Subaru model years have VINs covered under extended warranty for oil consumption. We check your VIN against Subaru's database before recommending any repair that might be covered. A covered repair is free — paying for something Subaru will cover is a waste of your money.
If consumption exceeds 1 quart per 1,000 miles and extended warranty coverage does not apply: cylinder compression and leak-down test to assess ring and valve condition. Leak-down above 20% on any cylinder indicates internal wear. Assessment: $199.99 first hour. Written report with repair options and economics analysis.
Full synthetic 0W-20 at 5,000-mile intervals is the best consumption prevention available. Correct viscosity oil provides the correct film thickness for Subaru's ring-to-wall clearances. Incorrect viscosity (too thin or too thick) changes consumption behavior. Always verify the viscosity on your door placard before every oil change. Call (530) 826-4275.
