The 2.5L EJ25 naturally aspirated engine in 1996–2011 Outback, Forester, Legacy, and Impreza has a documented external head gasket leak — coolant or oil weeping from the gasket surface on the exhaust port side. This is different from a blown head gasket with combustion gas intrusion.
Early signs: slight coolant odor, minor coolant consumption, oil residue under the exhaust manifold area. Left alone it progresses to external coolant leaks and eventual overheating. Repair: $1,499–$2,199 depending on engine access and whether heads need resurfacing.
