Toyota timing chain stretch by engine: 2GR-FE V6, 2AR-FE 4-cyl, 1GR/3UR truck V8. Symptoms, repair costs, and diagnosis in Chico CA. From $1,800.
Toyota timing chains are not truly "lifetime" components. The 2GR-FE V6 and 2AR-FE 4-cylinder develop chain stretch and tensioner wear at 100,000-150,000 miles. Cold-start rattle and VVT codes (P0011/P0012) are the primary symptoms.
2GR-FE chain replacement: $1,800-$3,500 including water pump. 5,000-mile oil changes with Toyota 0W-20 significantly extend chain life.
The most common symptom. A rattling sound on cold startup that diminishes or disappears after 30-60 seconds as oil pressure builds and the chain tensioner pressurizes.
The chain slack is worst on cold starts before oil reaches the tensioner. As the tensioner pressurizes, it takes up the slack and the rattle stops. This "present on cold start, gone when warm" pattern is the classic timing chain wear sign.
Variable valve timing codes indicate the camshaft is not reaching commanded timing position. Chain stretch prevents the VVT actuator from moving the camshaft to the correct angle quickly enough.
P0011 = intake camshaft over-advanced Bank 1. P0012 = retarded Bank 1. P0021/P0022 = Bank 2 equivalents. Often appear intermittently before becoming permanent.
Advanced chain wear — the chain is slack even with oil pressure present. At this stage, chain replacement is urgent. Continued operation risks chain jump (catastrophic) or chain failure.
VVT system unable to optimize cam timing due to chain stretch causes reduced performance across the RPM range. Often subtle — owners notice the vehicle feels less responsive than it used to.
Used in: Camry V6 (2007-2017), RAV4 V6, Highlander (2008-2019), Sienna, Tacoma V6, Venza V6. Also Lexus RX 350, ES 350, IS 350, GS 350.
Chain wear pattern at 100,000-150,000+ miles. Water pump is also chain-driven — replace simultaneously. Chain replacement $1,800-$3,500.
Used in: Camry 4-cyl (2012+), RAV4 2.5 (2013+), Highlander hybrid, Venza 2.5.
Less severe than 2GR-FE but cold-start rattle and VVT codes develop at 120,000-180,000 miles. Chain replacement $1,200-$2,000.
Used in: 4Runner (2003+), Tacoma V6 (2005+), FJ Cruiser, Land Cruiser Prado.
Generally very durable. Chain concerns arise at 200,000+ miles on high-mileage examples. 5,000-mile oil changes recommended for extended chain life.
Used in: Tundra 5.7L (2007+), Sequoia 5.7L, Land Cruiser 200.
Cold-start rattle at 150,000-250,000 miles on some examples. 4 timing chains (primary + secondary on each bank). Replacement is significant: $2,500-$4,500.
| Engine | Price Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2GR-FE V6 timing chain | $1,800–$3,500 | Includes chain kit, tensioners, guides, water pump, seals |
| 2AR-FE 4-cyl timing chain | $1,200–$2,000 | Chain kit, tensioner, water pump if needed |
| 3UR-FE V8 timing chain | $2,500–$4,500 | All 4 chains; significant disassembly required |
| Diagnostic (VVT codes + scan) | $199.99/hr | Confirms chain stretch vs other causes of VVT codes |
