A modern tune-up is spark plug replacement — no distributor cap, no carburetor. Also: coil inspection, air filter, throttle body cleaning. In Chico's agricultural dust, air filters clog faster than national schedules suggest. We service what's actually due based on your mileage and history — not a package designed for maximum revenue.

The Short Answer

A tune-up in a modern vehicle means spark plug replacement plus inspection of ignition coils, air filter, and fuel system — not the distributor cap and carburetor adjustments of 1970s-era tune-ups. The core service is spark plugs: copper at 30,000 miles, platinum at 60,000, iridium at 80,000–100,000. In Chico's agricultural dust, air filters often need replacement sooner than the national schedule suggests.

What a Modern Tune-Up Actually Is — Chico

Spark Plugs — The Core Service

Replacing spark plugs with OEM-specification plugs (NGK, Denso, ACDelco, Bosch depending on vehicle) at the correct interval. The plug's heat range, gap, and electrode material must match the manufacturer's spec — not just any plug that fits. OEM-spec plugs at the correct interval restore smooth combustion, eliminate misfires, and recover lost fuel economy.

Ignition Coil Inspection

Modern coil-on-plug ignition uses one coil per cylinder. At 80,000–100,000-mile plug changes, the coils are the same age and may show cracking or carbon tracking. We inspect each coil and advise if replacement alongside the plugs is recommended — doing both at the same time avoids a return visit when a coil fails shortly after new plugs.

Engine Air Filter

Clogged air filter restricts airflow, reducing power and fuel economy. In Chico's agricultural environment — rice field dust, orchard spray residue, harvest particulates — air filters clog faster than the national 15,000–20,000-mile recommendation. We photograph and inspect the filter at every oil change.

Throttle Body and MAF Cleaning

Carbon deposits on the throttle body plate and MAF sensor element cause rough idle and poor throttle response — especially on DI engines where no fuel wash cleans these surfaces. Throttle body cleaning at tune-up restores smooth idle and precise throttle feel, particularly valuable in Chico's dusty conditions.

Fuel Filter (Older Vehicles)

Pre-2005 many vehicles have an in-line serviceable fuel filter — typically at 30,000–60,000 miles. Modern vehicles have the filter inside the fuel tank as part of the pump assembly — not a routine tune-up item. We verify which type your vehicle has.

What a Tune-Up Is NOT — Modern Context

No Distributor Cap or Points

Eliminated with electronic ignition in the 1980s–1990s. Modern coil-on-plug ignition has no distributor, no cap, no points. Any mention of distributor cap on a modern vehicle is a service the vehicle doesn't need.

No Carburetor Adjustment

Fuel injection replaced carburetors in most vehicles by the late 1980s. No modern fuel-injected vehicle has a carburetor to adjust.

'Tune-Up Package' as a Sales Term

Some shops sell comprehensive tune-up packages that include services not due on your specific vehicle. At Tedious, we service what's actually due based on your vehicle's mileage and your specific maintenance history — not a fixed package designed for maximum revenue.

Frequently Asked Questions — Chico, CA

What does a tune-up include?

Spark plug replacement with OEM-spec plugs (core service), ignition coil inspection, engine air filter replacement, fuel system inspection, and throttle body/MAF cleaning where applicable. Specific components depend on vehicle type and mileage.

How often does a car need a tune-up?

Spark plug interval determines frequency: copper 30,000 miles, platinum 60,000, iridium 80,000–100,000. In Chico severe service, shorten iridium to 80,000. Air filter as needed — often sooner than national recommendations given Chico's agricultural dust.

What happened to distributor caps and points?

Eliminated with electronic ignition in the 1980s–1990s. Modern coil-on-plug ignition replaces the distributor with one coil per cylinder. No cap, no rotor, no points on any modern vehicle.

How do I know if my car needs a tune-up?

Rough idle, stumble under acceleration, poor fuel economy, extended hot-soak cranking in Chico summer, or check engine light with misfire codes (P0301–P0308). Also: spark plugs at or past service interval is reason to schedule even without symptoms.

Does a tune-up improve fuel economy?

Yes — worn plugs reduce combustion efficiency. A tune-up at the correct interval restores combustion efficiency and can improve fuel economy 5–10% from worn-plug baseline.
