All motor oil starts with a base oil plus an additive package. The American Petroleum Institute (API) classifies base oils into five groups. Groups I–III are mineral (petroleum-derived). Group IV is PAO (polyalphaolefin) — a true synthetic molecule engineered from scratch. Group V covers esters and other synthetics.
Group III mineral oil that has been highly refined is sometimes marketed as "full synthetic" — this is technically legal in the US but different from true PAO-based Group IV synthetics. Most major brands (Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum, Castrol Edge, Valvoline Full Synthetic) use Group III or III+ with some Group IV blended in.
