The Short Answer

Shaking specifically when braking = warped rotors in almost every case. The uneven rotor surface creates a pulsation through the pedal and steering wheel. Brake service (pads + rotors) from $599.99/axle. Always front axle first — front brakes do 70% of the stopping work.

Warped Brake Rotors — Most Common

Brake rotors warp from heat cycles — heavy braking, towing, mountain descents, and emergency stops all contribute. The rotor surface becomes uneven. As the pad contacts the uneven surface, it creates pulsation felt through the brake pedal and steering wheel.

Fix: rotor replacement with new pads. We never replace pads alone — new pads on old rotors recreates the problem within weeks and glazes the new pads. From $599.99/axle.

Loose or Seized Brake Caliper

A loose caliper bolt allows the caliper to move during braking, creating a clunking or shaking sensation. A partially seized caliper applies uneven pressure and can cause pulling as well as shaking.

Fix: caliper service or replacement. From $299.99 per caliper including hardware and brake fluid flush.

Worn Brake Pads to Metal

Pads worn through to the metal backing plate create a grinding sensation when braking — more of a grinding vibration than a smooth pulsation. Also damages rotors rapidly. Address immediately — rotors may require replacement regardless.

Front Wheel Bearing Play

A worn wheel bearing with excess play can amplify vibration during braking as the rotor wobbles slightly on the hub. If brake shaking is accompanied by a grinding or humming noise while driving, wheel bearing diagnosis is warranted. Wheel bearing from $531.89.

Suspension Worn Components

Worn ball joints, tie rod ends, or control arm bushings can allow the wheel to move slightly under braking load, amplifying any rotor imperfection into pronounced shaking. Suspension inspection included with every brake service.
