BMW oil leaks most commonly come from the valve cover gasket, oil filter housing gasket, oil pan gasket, rear main seal, or camshaft sensor seals. Exact location requires inspection. All BMW engines are interference design — oil loss causes serious damage quickly.
The valve cover gasket seals the top of the engine. On N20, N26, N52, N54, and N55 engines it degrades with age and heat cycles. Oil seeps down the side of the engine and burns on exhaust components, causing a distinct oil smell.
Repair: $450-$750 including gasket, spark plug tube seals, and torque-to-spec reassembly.
The oil filter housing on many BMW 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines has a plastic housing with a rubber gasket that hardens and cracks with age. Oil drips from the center of the engine toward the front.
Repair: $350-$600. Often causes oil to drip onto the alternator or serpentine belt — address promptly.
Oil pan leaks appear as puddles under the engine after parking. The pan gasket or drain plug washer are common sources. More expensive on BMWs because the undertray must be removed and some models require subframe lowering.

Seals the crankshaft where it exits the back of the engine. Oil appears on the bellhousing/transmission interface. Repair requires transmission removal. Most expensive BMW oil leak repair.

The camshaft sensors have O-ring seals that harden and leak on high-mileage BMW engines. Oil seeps around the sensor body. Repair is relatively straightforward: $200-$350 per sensor location.
N20, N55, S55, B58 turbo engines have oil lines feeding the turbocharger. These fittings and lines can develop seeps. Scan tool data showing oil consumption with no visible external leak may indicate internal turbo seal wear.
