Car vibration in Chico is most often a wheel balance issue from pothole damage on CA-32 or East Avenue knocking a weight off. A pulsing vibration that intensifies when you apply the brakes is rotor thickness variation — the rotor has spots that are thicker than others, pushing the caliper piston back rhythmically as the rotor turns. A vibration that appears specifically under hard acceleration — not at cruise — suggests a worn CV axle outer joint, a failing engine or transmission mount, or in front-wheel-drive vehicles, a failing inner CV joint. The torsional load of acceleration stresses these components in a way that normal cruising doesn't.
A vibration present at all highway speeds that doesn't follow the "appears at one specific speed" pattern of a wheel balance issue usually means a damaged tire — internal belt separation, a flat spot from locking brakes, or a bulge from sidewall impact. These are visible on inspection but not always from the outside — we dismount the tire to check the inside of the carcass.
A vibration felt at idle that worsens in Drive (vs Park/Neutral) and may produce a clunk when shifting into gear indicates a failed engine mount or transmission mount. The vibration is the engine rocking against the failed mount rather than being isolated from the chassis.
A new vibration that appeared after tire rotation or new tire installation is almost certainly a balance issue — either the tires weren't rebalanced after rotation, or a new tire has a defect or abnormal runout. Come back in — this should not happen and we rebalance at no additional charge.
Chico's roads — CA-32, East Avenue, Hicks Lane — produce more pothole-related tire and suspension damage per vehicle than most California cities. A sudden new vibration after hitting a pothole can mean:
A bent alloy rim causes a consistent per-revolution vibration that's clearly felt through the steering wheel. We check rim runout on the balancer — a bent rim won't balance correctly regardless of how many weights are added. Rim straightening is possible for minor bends; replacement for significant damage.
Impact can pop a wheel weight off instantly. The wheel goes from perfectly balanced to significantly imbalanced in one hit. This produces immediate highway vibration. Rebalancing with new weights resolves it.
Hard pothole impact can damage tire sidewall structure internally without visible external bulge. An internally damaged tire will vibrate at highway speed. We dismount and inspect the inside carcass when post-impact vibration doesn't respond to standard balancing.
A significant pothole hit can knock alignment out of spec — particularly caster and toe. This produces pull and sometimes vibration. We check alignment after any post-pothole complaint. Alignment: $169.99.

Depends on cause. Balance issue: safe to drive, but annoying. Rotor vibration: safe short distances. Wheel bearing vibration: drive soon to avoid bearing failure. Belt separation or bulge in tire: do not drive — tire can blow at highway speed. We'll tell you urgency level after diagnosis.
