White or grey diesel smoke has four main causes: normal cold-start condensation (clears quickly), failed glow plugs or grid heater (cold start only, clears warm), coolant entering the combustion chamber from EGR cooler failure or head gasket, or unburned fuel from injector issues. Each has a distinct diagnostic path.
White diesel smoke means unburned or partially burned material is exiting the exhaust. On a cold morning, a small puff that clears quickly is normal condensation. Persistent white smoke — especially under load or after warmup — indicates glow plug failure, EGR cooler failure, or head gasket breach. A small puff of white vapor on cold startup that disappears within 1–2 minutes is normal water vapor condensation from the exhaust system. In Chico's 35–40°F winter mornings, this is more visible than in summer. It should completely clear as the engine reaches operating temperature. If it persists after warmup, it's not normal condensation.
Failed glow plugs cause incomplete combustion on cold starts — unburned fuel exits as white smoke. The smoke is most severe on the first cold start and gradually decreases as the engine warms. By fully warm, the smoke may be gone — but the hard cold start and extended smoke period indicate glow plug diagnosis is needed.
EGR cooler failure allows coolant to enter the exhaust stream. White smoke that persists after warmup and has a sweet smell is a strong indicator of coolant in the exhaust — EGR cooler or head gasket. HC combustion test and chemical block test identify the source non-invasively before any teardown.
An injector that dribbles fuel after the injection event or sticks slightly open allows raw fuel into the cylinder — white smoke with a diesel fuel smell. Injector return flow testing identifies the faulty injector. Less common than glow plug or EGR cooler failure but possible on high-mileage trucks.
