Car won't go into gear Chico CA? Low ATF, range sensor, shift solenoid, brake interlock, or CVT failure. Free code scan. Call before towing. (530) 826-4275.
Depends on the type. Automatic: low ATF level, failed range sensor, shift solenoid, or brake-shift interlock. CVT: internal failure or critically low fluid. Manual: worn clutch or hydraulic failure. Free code scan and fluid level check are the starting point. Call us before arranging a tow — many causes are diagnosable and fixable same day.
A car that won't go into gear in Chico — selector won't move, engages but no movement, or slams into gear with a lurch — has one of three causes depending on transmission type. Automatic: low fluid, failed shift solenoid, or transmission range sensor. CVT: internal failure or fluid pressure issue. Manual: worn clutch, bent shift linkage, or failed synchronizer. Free code scan and fluid inspection are the starting point regardless of type.
Selector moves to Drive but vehicle doesn't move or moves with a long delay: low ATF level (hydraulic pressure loss), a failed forward clutch pack, or a failed transmission range sensor (the sensor that tells the TCM which gear is selected). Free code scan first — P0705–P0710 range sensor codes are common. Check ATF level second. If level and codes are normal, further hydraulic and mechanical diagnosis at $199.99/hr.
Can't move the selector out of Park: most modern vehicles have a brake-shift interlock requiring the brake pedal to be depressed before the selector will move. If the brake pedal doesn't release the selector, the brake switch, the interlock solenoid, or the fuse for the interlock circuit has failed. Simple fix once identified. Override slot: most vehicles have a manual release slot near the selector for emergency release.
CVT selects Drive but the vehicle doesn't move or barely creeps: CVT internal belt-pulley failure or severely low CVT fluid. A CVT that has failed internally often allows the vehicle to move at very low speed but has no ability to increase ratio — you can move in a parking lot at 2 mph but not accelerate. This is late-stage CVT failure. Check fluid level first; if adequate, a CVT diagnostic is needed.
Manual transmission that won't engage first gear from a stop (clutch fully depressed): worn clutch disc with insufficient friction to disengage, or a failed clutch hydraulic master/slave cylinder. Won't engage any gear with clutch down: transmission internal synchronizer failure. Grinding into reverse: reverse synchronizer or reverse idler gear issue.
ATF level is the first thing to check — a transmission that's lost fluid from a leak may not have enough hydraulic pressure to engage any gear. Check the dipstick with the engine warm and running (most automatics).
P0700-series codes identify TCM faults, range sensor failure, and solenoid issues. P0705 (range sensor) and P0750–P0760 (solenoid) are common 'won't go into gear' codes that have relatively simple fixes.
Many 'won't go into gear' situations have simple causes (brake interlock fuse, low ATF level, range sensor) that can be assessed over the phone at (530) 826-4275 before arranging a tow. Call first.
Check ATF level first — low fluid from a leak causes hydraulic pressure loss and prevents gear engagement. Then free code scan for P0705 (range sensor) or P0750+ (solenoid) codes. If both are normal, hydraulic and mechanical transmission diagnosis at $199.99/hr.
Brake-shift interlock — the brake pedal must be fully depressed before the selector will move. If pressing the brake fully doesn't release it, the brake light switch, interlock solenoid, or its fuse has failed. Check the fuse first. Use the manual override slot near the selector (covered by a small plastic cap) for emergency release.
Late-stage CVT belt-pulley failure or critically low CVT fluid. A CVT with internal failure often allows very slow movement but no speed increase. Check CVT fluid level immediately — if adequate, the CVT needs diagnosis and likely replacement. This is a tow-it-in situation.
With clutch fully depressed and no gear engagement: worn clutch disc without enough friction to disengage, or failed clutch hydraulic master/slave cylinder. Grinding when pressing into gear: synchronizer wear. Complete inability to select any gear: call us — may be clutch hydraulic or internal failure.
Free code scan and fluid level check. Further diagnosis at $199.99/hr with written report identifying the specific cause. Many cases are resolved with a fluid service or a single sensor replacement. Written estimate before any repair.
