What Is a CV Axle and Why Does It Fail?
CV Joint Basics
CV (Constant Velocity) axles transfer power from the transmission to the drive wheels. The joints at each end allow the axle to flex as the suspension moves and the steering turns — while still transmitting power smoothly.
The most common failure point is the outer CV joint on FWD vehicles. The rubber boot surrounding the joint holds grease in and keeps dirt and water out. When the boot cracks — from age, road debris, or a hit — the grease escapes and contaminated grit enters the joint. From that point, wear accelerates and the joint will fail.
Symptoms of a Failing CV Axle
- Clicking or popping when turning: Classic outer CV joint failure. The click happens most on tight turns while accelerating — pulling out of a driveway, turning in a parking lot.
- Vibration on acceleration: Can indicate inner CV joint failure or excessive wear throughout the axle.
- Clunking from the front when accelerating or decelerating: Can be the inner joint, or a worn axle shaft spline in the transmission output.
- Grease flung around the inside of the wheel well: The boot has torn and the joint is slinging grease. The joint itself may still be okay — we'll inspect to confirm.
CV Axle Replacement vs. Boot Replacement
Why We Replace the Axle, Not Just the Boot
CV boot-only replacement is a 1990s repair. Today's remanufactured CV axles are priced reasonably — and the labor to properly disassemble the joint, clean it, repack it with the correct grease, and install a new boot is often more than the cost of a complete axle assembly.
More importantly: once a CV joint has run contaminated, the rollers and race are already worn. A new boot over a worn joint buys weeks, not years. We replace the complete axle with a quality remanufactured unit that comes with a new joint, new boot, and hardware.
