Engine noise diagnostic is $199.99 and applied to any repair. We diagnose the actual cause — not just throw parts at it.
Top-end mechanical noise. Most commonly from valve train: lifters, lash adjusters, valve clearance, or worn rocker arms. Also possible: cracked exhaust manifold (called "exhaust manifold tick" — sounds like ticking but is actually exhaust pulses escaping a crack), failed fuel injector, PCV valve rattle. Severity depends on cause — cracked exhaust manifold is $649-$1,499; HVA lifter replacement on a Hemi is $2,499-$4,999.
Stop driving. Knocking under load (acceleration, climbing hills) most likely indicates rod knock — a connecting rod bearing has worn out and the rod is hitting the crankshaft journal hard. Also possible: piston slap (cold), main bearing knock, severe pre-ignition / detonation. All require immediate stop and diagnostic. Continued driving causes complete engine failure within minutes to days. Repair is typically engine replacement — $6,999+.
Detonation or pre-ignition — the air-fuel mixture is igniting before the spark plug fires, causing a sharp metallic ping. Causes: low-octane fuel in a high-compression engine, bad knock sensor, carbon buildup on pistons, vacuum leak, EGR malfunction, lean fuel mixture. We diagnose with scan tool data showing knock sensor activity and timing retard. Repair varies $200-$2,000 depending on root cause.
Belt-driven accessory or pump making noise. Power steering pump whine is classic on older domestic vehicles. Failing alternator bearing whines. AC compressor whine. Belt tensioner pulley failing. Diagnosed by stethoscope on each accessory or by removing the belt to identify which pulley is the source. Repair $249-$899 depending on component.
Belt slipping. Common causes: glazed belt, failing belt tensioner not maintaining tension, contaminated belt (oil leak landing on belt), worn pulley grooves. Replace belt + tensioner together: $349-$549. We never replace just the belt — the tensioner is the actual cause more often than not.
Most commonly: timing chain tensioner not pressurizing immediately. The chain has slack until oil pressure builds and pressurizes the hydraulic tensioner. Documented on BMW N20, BMW N55, Audi 2.0T EA888, Toyota M274, Hyundai Theta, Nissan QR25. This is the warning sign of timing chain stretch. Replace the chain before failure. Repair $1,499-$3,499 depending on engine; engine destruction if chain skips a tooth runs $7,000+.
Could be detonation (see "knocking on acceleration" above) or could be exhaust heat shield rattle, cracked flex pipe, or loose exhaust hanger. Heat shield rattle is the most common cause and the cheapest fix — a $249 zip-tie or weld repair. Detonation requires diagnostic.
Air or vacuum leak. Vacuum hose cracked, intake gasket leaking, brake booster hose split, EVAP system leak. Combined with poor idle, lean codes, or rough running, vacuum leak is likely. Diagnostic uses smoke machine to find the leak. Repair $249-$799 depending on location.
Metal-on-metal contact. Could be: starter motor not disengaging, AC compressor clutch failure, alternator bearing failure (advanced), water pump bearing failure (advanced), brake-related noise (not engine but often confused). Diagnose by isolating which component is grinding. Severity depends on source — alternator $549, water pump from $516.27 internal engine grinding (very rare) is engine replacement.
Misfire or exhaust system issue. Backfire through the intake (loud pop on the top of the engine) suggests a stuck-open intake valve or severe ignition timing problem. Backfire through the exhaust (loud pop from tailpipe) suggests unburned fuel in exhaust ignited by hot catalyst — often misfire. Diagnostic with scan tool identifies misfire codes.
On turbocharged engines, whistling under load is normal turbo wastegate operation. Excessive whistling indicates boost leak, exhaust leak before the turbo, or failing turbo bearing. On naturally aspirated engines, whistling is most often a vacuum leak or intake hose crack. Diagnostic with smoke machine and boost pressure test.
Diagnostic time: 1-2 hours. Diagnostic fee $199.99,. Diagnostic a separate paid service at .99/hr. Approved repairs of + receive a diagnostic credit, increasing up to a full waiver on bills over ,000.

Mechanics generally categorize engine noises into two camps:
The distinction matters because misjudging a knock as "just a tick" and continuing to drive is the most expensive mistake we see. A connecting rod bearing failure caught at the warning-knock stage is a $2,500-$3,500 bottom-end refresh. The same failure ignored for 100 miles is engine replacement — $7,000+.
Most likely top-end valve train. On Honda K-series it could be valve clearance due for adjustment. On Hemi, BMW, and similar HVA-equipped engines it's a hydraulic lifter that doesn't fully pressurize at cold start. On 5.4L Triton it's the cam phaser. Diagnostic identifies which.
Possibly very. Cold-start rattle on BMW N20, Audi 2.0T, Toyota M274, Nissan QR25, and similar engines is the warning sign of timing chain stretch. Failure to address ends with the chain skipping teeth, valves bending, and engine replacement at $7,000+. Schedule diagnostic immediately.
No. A genuine knock from the bottom of the engine is rod or main bearing failure happening in real time. Even short distances cause additional damage. Pull over, shut the engine off, and call us at (530) 826-4275. We will arrange a tow.
Ping is light, fast metallic sound during acceleration — detonation. Tick is rapid light tapping at idle — valve train. Knock is deeper, slower, RPM-synchronous heavy thump — rod or main bearing. The pitch and rhythm tell us where to look.
Very accurate when used by a trained technician. The stethoscope amplifies sound at the contact point and largely eliminates everything else. Touching the stethoscope to each component in turn reveals which is loudest. Combined with scan tool data and visual inspection, we identify the source on 90%+ of noise complaints in under an hour.
Sometimes — aftermarket performance exhausts can make engine noises harder to hear from inside the cabin. We have heard exhaust noise complaints that turned out to be timing chain rattle masked by an aftermarket muffler. Stethoscope inspection with the engine running clarifies regardless of exhaust loudness.
Yes — describe the conditions when it occurs. We replicate those conditions during the test drive: cold start, hot idle, hill climb, highway cruise, deceleration, hard acceleration. With patience we can usually replicate intermittent noises. If we cannot, we keep the vehicle a day or so and start it cold the next morning.
$199.99 for engine noise diagnostic. Diagnostic a separate paid service at .99/hr. Approved repairs of + receive a diagnostic credit, increasing up to a full waiver on bills over ,000. We give you a written estimate before any actual repair work.
Even better — we tell you so. Some noises turn out to be a $35 PCV valve, a loose heat shield, or a worn belt tensioner under $300. We diagnose accurately regardless of repair cost. Your trust is worth more to us than upselling.
Yes — some noises are explicit warnings. Cold-start timing chain rattle is a warning that the chain is about to fail. Light rod knock is a warning that the bearing is failing. Lifter tick on AFM-equipped GM engines often progresses to lifter collapse. Diagnostic catches these early.
1-2 hours typically. Some intermittent noise complaints take longer because we need to replicate the noise. We tell you the timing when you check in.
