Complete decoder for every Honda Maintenance Minder code. A and B base services. Sub-codes 1-7. Every common combination explained. What each service involves, when typically due, and our service approach.
Honda's Maintenance Minder system displays alphanumeric codes like A1, B1, A12, B123, B137 telling you what service is due based on actual driving conditions. The letters indicate base service: A means oil and filter change only; B means oil and filter plus tire rotation plus multi-point inspection. The numbers are sub-codes for additional services: 1 = tire rotation, 2 = air filter and cabin air filter, 3 = transmission fluid, 4 = spark plugs/valve adjustment/coolant, 5 = coolant only, 6 = rear differential (AWD), 7 = brake fluid. Codes combine, so A123 means oil change + tire rotation + air/cabin filters + transmission fluid. This complete guide explains every code, every combination, what each service involves, when to perform it, and approximate timing. We perform every Maintenance Minder service at Tedious Auto Repair in Chico with proper Honda-spec parts and fluids.
If you drive a Honda, you've likely seen messages like "Service Due Soon: A1" or "B137" on your dashboard. These codes come from Honda's Maintenance Minder system, which has replaced the old time/mileage-based service schedule on every Honda since 2006.
The Maintenance Minder calculates when service is due based on your actual driving conditions: short trips, long trips, cold starts, towing, hard acceleration, ambient temperature. Two identical Honda Civics with different drivers will see different Maintenance Minder timing.
This page is the complete decoder for every Maintenance Minder code Honda uses, what each service involves, and how Tedious Auto Repair handles each one for Chico-area Honda owners.
The base service. Engine oil drain and refill plus new oil filter. Typically appears every 5,000-10,000 miles depending on driving conditions. Honda specifies full-synthetic oil meeting Honda specifications (typically 0W-20 for modern Hondas, check your owner's manual for exact spec).
Everything in A service, plus tire rotation, plus multi-point inspection. Typically appears every other A interval. Multi-point inspection checks fluid levels, tire condition, brake condition, belt and hose condition, suspension, lights, and other wear items.
Sub-codes attach to the A or B base service when additional service is due. Multiple sub-codes can appear together (A123, B137, etc.).
Rotate tires front-to-rear (and side-to-side per Honda spec). Typically appears every 7,500-10,000 miles. Already included in B service, so "1" attached to A means oil change plus tire rotation. Typical timing: every 7,500-10,000 miles.
Replace both filters. Engine air filter protects engine from intake contamination. Cabin air filter cleans air entering passenger compartment. Typical timing: every 15,000-30,000 miles depending on driving conditions. Chico-area drivers in wildfire smoke months may need cabin filter sooner.
Replace transmission fluid. For automatic: Honda ATF-DW1 (drain-and-fill). For CVT: Honda HCF-2 (CVT-specific fluid; substitutes destroy CVT). Typical timing: every 30,000-50,000 miles severe service, every 60,000-100,000 miles normal service. See our CVT Service page.
Major service. Replace spark plugs (typically iridium, 100,000+ mile interval). Adjust valves on 4-cylinder Hondas (specific Honda procedure). Replace coolant with Honda Type 2. Typical timing: 100,000-150,000 miles. See our valve adjustment guide.
Standalone coolant replacement (without the spark plug and valve adjustment of code 4). Honda Type 2 coolant (blue/green). Typical timing: every 60,000-120,000 miles depending on coolant type and driving conditions.
For AWD/4WD Hondas (CR-V AWD, Pilot, Passport, Ridgeline). Replace rear differential fluid with Honda Dual Pump Fluid II (DPSF II). Specific Honda fluid; substitutes cause noise and eventual failure. Typical timing: every 30,000-60,000 miles depending on use.
Replace brake fluid (DOT 3 or DOT 4 per spec). Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time regardless of mileage, reducing boiling point. Typical timing: every 3 years regardless of mileage.
Codes combine in alphanumeric order. The base letter (A or B) comes first, then numbers ascending.
Base oil/filter service plus tire rotation. Common code, typically every 7,500-10,000 miles. Covered by Honda Service Pass for new Hondas under 2yr/24K miles. See our A1 Service page.
The full B service. Typically appears every 15,000-20,000 miles or alternating with A1. Covered by Honda Service Pass. See our B1 Service page.
A service plus filters. Typically appears around 15,000, 45,000 miles, etc. NOT covered by Service Pass (filters are at cost). See our A12 Service page.
B service plus filter replacements. Typical around 30,000 miles for many drivers. See our B12 Service page.
A service plus transmission fluid. Typical around 30,000-60,000 miles depending on driving conditions. Honda-spec transmission fluid required.
B service plus transmission fluid replacement. Common code around 60,000 miles for many Hondas.
Comprehensive A-based service. Typical around 30,000-45,000 miles for many drivers. Substantial service appointment.
Comprehensive B-based service. Common around 30,000 miles — this is often the equivalent of "30K Service" that older service schedules called for. See our 30K Service page.
B service plus filters plus coolant flush. Common around 60,000 miles when transmission service isn't yet due but coolant interval has arrived.
B service plus filter replacement plus brake fluid service. Brake fluid every 3 years regardless of mileage, so this combination depends on timing.
B service plus transmission fluid plus coolant. Substantial service common around 60,000 miles depending on intervals.
B service plus transmission plus brake fluid. Substantial service. See our B137 Service page.
Very substantial service combining major fluid changes. Common around 60,000-75,000 miles depending on prior service history.
The maximum B combination: B service + filters + transmission + coolant + brake fluid. Major service that combines essentially all maintenance items into one visit. Typical interval where multiple services align.
The "4" sub-code is the major engine service: spark plugs, valve adjustment (4-cylinder), coolant. Typically appears at 100,000-150,000 miles. Substantial service. See our valve adjustment guide.
Approximate pricing for common Maintenance Minder service combinations. Specific pricing confirmed in written estimate before work. Honda Service Pass-eligible new Hondas: A1 and B1 are free at the dealer during the Service Pass period.
Oil change with optional tire rotation. Honda-spec full-synthetic oil and OEM-equivalent filter. Standard oil change pricing.
Oil change with tire rotation and digital inspection. Photos and findings texted to your phone.
A/B service plus engine air filter and cabin air filter replacement. Both filters Honda-spec.
A/B service plus transmission fluid. Proper Honda ATF-DW1 (automatic) or HCF-2 (CVT). Wrong fluid damages transmission.
Comprehensive service. A/B plus filters plus transmission. Substantial maintenance appointment.
B service plus transmission fluid plus brake fluid. Brake fluid bleed and replace included.
Major service. Iridium spark plugs (NGK or Denso OE-equivalent), valve adjustment per Honda procedure, Honda Type 2 coolant flush. Most-substantial routine service.
Everything-in-one-visit services. Significant maintenance combining multiple major items. Pricing per individual service totals.
Newer Hondas display Maintenance Minder messages on the multi-information display or info screen. Older Hondas may show messages on the instrument cluster or require menu navigation.
Maintenance Minder shows percentage of oil life remaining (from 100% after service to 0% when service is due). At 15% you receive a warning; at 0% the "Service Due" indicator activates with specific code(s).
If multiple services are due, all applicable codes display. A code may appear as "A1" alone or "A123" combining all due services.
"Service Due Soon" appears at low percentage (around 15%). Schedule service within a few weeks. "Service Due Now" appears at 0% — schedule promptly but don't panic; you have time.
If service is significantly overdue, system shows negative percentage. Schedule as soon as possible. Severely overdue maintenance can cause damage.
After Maintenance Minder service is performed, the system must be reset. Proper reset is essential for accurate future service tracking.
We perform Honda-specific Maintenance Minder reset after each service using HDS-compatible scan tool. Codes reset properly, future intervals continue tracking accurately.
If you perform a service yourself (typically oil change), the Maintenance Minder can be reset manually. Procedure varies by model year:
Most modern Hondas: Press and hold the SEL/RESET button while in the maintenance display, hold until message blinks, release, then press and hold again until reset confirms.
Older Hondas may require longer hold times or different button sequences.
Some Honda systems allow resetting specific sub-codes individually (only the A, only the 1, etc.). This is useful when you perform one service but not the others shown. Procedure varies.
If reset doesn't take, the code remains displayed. Try again or have us reset it properly with scan tool.
Honda's system tracks driving conditions, not just miles. Factors that affect Maintenance Minder timing:
Engines wear most during cold starts. Many cold starts (short trips) accelerate oil degradation and shorten interval.
Short trips don't allow engine to reach full operating temperature, causing more moisture and fuel contamination in oil. Short-trip driving shortens Maintenance Minder intervals.
Extended idling adds engine running hours without corresponding mileage. Affects timing.
Hard acceleration and high-RPM driving wear engine and transmission faster than gentle driving. Affects timing.
Towing or heavy loads increase engine and transmission wear. Significantly accelerates Maintenance Minder intervals.
Extreme heat (Chico summers) increases oil oxidation. Extreme cold increases moisture in oil. Both factor into intervals.
Chico drivers experience hot summers, occasional smoke from wildfires, mild winters, and varied trip patterns. Maintenance Minder accounts for these conditions. Two Hondas with same mileage may show different intervals based on actual use.
Honda Service Pass (new 2023+ Hondas with 2-year/24K-mile coverage) provides FREE A1 and B1 services at participating dealers. Important details:
See our Honda Service Pass page for complete details.
A is oil change only. B is oil change plus tire rotation plus multi-point inspection. Both can have sub-codes (1-7) for additional services.
Don't skip significantly. The system accounts for your actual driving conditions; if it shows service due, the engine oil or other fluid has degraded based on actual use. Brief delays are usually fine; weeks-long delays risk damage.
If the system shows service due at unusually short intervals, there may be a sensor issue or driving condition the system is tracking. We can diagnose. If unusually long, it could be a software issue or you may be driving in conditions the system recognizes as low-wear.
Low-mileage drivers should follow time-based intervals regardless. Oil degrades over time even without driving (oxidation, moisture absorption). Honda generally recommends oil change at least once yearly even for very low mileage.
Rare but possible. Sensor issues or software glitches can affect calculations. We can diagnose system function if you suspect issues.
When multiple sub-codes appear, ideally do them all at once for efficiency. But you can prioritize: oil change (A) and tire rotation (1) most urgent; transmission (3) and major engine service (4) important; air filters (2) and coolant (5) somewhat flexible by a few weeks.
Yes. We perform services per Honda's Maintenance Minder calculations. Some independent shops over-recommend services not yet due; we don't — we recommend what the Maintenance Minder calls for plus our inspection findings.
Varies widely by driving conditions. Typical Chico drivers see A1 every 7,500-10,000 miles, B1 every 15,000-20,000 miles, A12/B12 every 15,000-30,000 miles, A13/B13 around 30,000-60,000 miles, A4/B4 around 100,000-150,000 miles. Your specific intervals depend on your driving.
